I had dermal implants put into my back in February and now that both are all healed up I love them:thumbsup2... but when I started thinking about my wedding/honeymoon trip and how awesome they'll look at the pools in WDW it occurred to me that I might have some issues on the rougher rides. I'm mostly concerned about Big Thunder since I tend to slide around in that one and Space since it's so rough on the back. Has anyone had any experience with this? Any one have horrible experiences they'd like to share? I'd hate to spend my entire honeymoon in pain because I had a dermal ripped out on a ride but I'd also hate to miss out on all my favourite coasters.

We're also planning on heading to Universal for a couple days to check out the WWoHP... Anyone had any experiences on the coasters there?

What are dermal implants?

A dermal implant is a type of piercing where only one end is exposed unlike a typical piercing with both ends exposed (ears, navel, nose, etc). An anchor is implanted under the skin and the dermal is screwed into it. Here's an image of a girl with two in her back similar to mine

While I don't have them I would think putting a large band aid over each would keep them less likely to be moved in a bad way.

On a side note where did you get this done? And how much was it?

I had mine done at a local piercing parlor Tribal Expressions. Including the jewelry it was about $200 to have it done. Most places that do real piercing (not just ears) should be able to do them. Do know going in that these reject a lot more than normal piercings would and only have about a 50% success rate.

If you put a large bandaid over them (put the non-sticky part on the actual jewelry itself, so that the adhesive doesn't pull on it when you go to take the bandage off), they shouldn't get ripped out, but you might have some bruising from bumping them on the seats. I would imagine moreso on BTMRR than Space Mountain, since it's a bit of a rougher ride.

I have two dermal piercings on my sternum, and I love them, too! Mine took forever to heal, though (~6 months or so), and I was worried one of them would get rejected, but thankfully after some TLC, it healed up just fine.

I have aqua colored crystal tops on mine right now. I got a 2-for-1 coupon at a tattoo convention last year, so I got mine done for $50 total, including jewelry. I'd say the whole procedure took maybe 20 minutes from the time I sat down in the chair. The first one took a little longer, because he had to go back and widen the piercing to get the base to fit in, but the second one was easy-peasy.

I had the same experience mine were healing fine but slowly when I had an incident with a towel getting caught on a towel and it got infected and I thought it was going to reject. I babied it for weeks then finally I bought some brand new antibacterial ointment and 3 days later it was perfect. I got mine done with blue jeweled tops and I love them. So cute and a nice little touch of sparkle.

My only problem with wearing bandaids is that they pull all the skin off my back too so my dermals are fine but I have raw patches of skin on either side... Maybe the bigger square bandages wouldn't pull off so much skin though... Or maybe I'll just end up with a big square of raw skin instead of a couple of little rectangles lol

Given the location of your implants, I think you should be just fine on rides. There's not much on most coasters that would catch on that area. You may experience some irritation from being bounced against the seat back, but I don't think there's any getting around that.

Like PPs have said, if you want, you could cover them with a large bandaid or something similar, but I'm not entirely sure that would even be necessary.

Anyone else have dermals in their backs and been to the parks with them? I keep telling DF that we need to go to Disneyland to test mine out before our huge trip to WDW but he's not buying that as a story haha

YIKES!!!!! :scared1: Thanks.

I knew I should not have opened this thread this morning, haha, when will I learn. :)

I'd suggest talking to your piercer and see what they recommend. Offhand, I would think that these would help, depending on how far out of the skin the dermal sticks. At the very least, they could be used with a band aid or square of gauze over them to provide some extra cushioning.

Use a weight lifting belt ;)

Last trip we made I was 6 months out from getting some "subdermal implants" in my back that consisted of some plates and a handful titanuim of screws that hold my spine together. It's in my lower back where your implants are and I don't remember anything really touching it or hurting that area directly. The curve in your back puts most of the pressure farther up mid-back.

I think you'll be fine.

Just a quick thought....you might have a problem at the waterparks if you are planning to go. They have a policy about bathing suits and such with metal buttons and rivets. It can scratch the slides or possibly get caught. I don't know if they would have an issue with your piercing or not but I thought I would mention it :)

I'm not sure that's a normal reaction to adhesive bandages. Have you tried the latex-free ones? Do they do that same thing? If you've only ever used latex-containing bandages, you really should check out the possibility of an allergy.

I just checked and both kinds of bandaids have latex in them though I've never had an issue with any other latex product. Maybe I'll try some without latex. As my piercings are a bit higher up my back than the picture I posted (just about at my natural waist) I'm hopeful the curve of my back will prevent any issues though I will definitely have bandaids with me if I notice any problems.

Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions!

I would also try non-latex bandaids. I know some people have had this issue due to latex or because they are sensitive to the tape adhesive.

Yep. I've been noticing that my son gets extremely red under the adhesive with some types of bandages but not with others. And my mom, who had never been allergic to them before, developed a rotten allergy to latex while dealing with a series of medical procedures.
