Calling all Chicago DISers #2

Wow! At our school, if they took Spanish I, it counts for high school. Then again, it is a class that they actually go to the H.S. to take, so maybe that is why?? Have fun tonight! Ours should be coming soon.

That's probably it. I actually looked up the information at the State of IL education website because I was trying to find graduation requirements for the class of 2012 out, since the program lists 2008 and then 2009, 2010 & 2011 all have different requirements, so wasn't sure if 2012 would be. From what I can tell it's the same as the 2009-2011 requirements. I guess I'll find out tonight.

In the process of reading a VERY, VERY long information document, etc.. basically it stated that taking a HS level course in Middle School only counts toward HS credit IF it's taken at the High School. Since DD's class is taken at the Middle School it doesn't count. I personally think that stinks too but it's the way it is. I figure since they push so much that this is the equivilant class as taking French I your Freshman year, you should get credit for it!

I had thought of that before she took it. Here it is a High School level course but you don't get credit for it, so basically you are stuck either re-taking it again next year or you could take French II. Of course, you don't even need *any* language to graduate. It's not a requirement. It's just most colleges want to see 2 years of language and I know the state colleges put that as a requirement.

Unfortunately, since Home Ec wasn't a full-year course (since she loved that class & wanted to take it), she was stuck taking the language. She would have had to match Home Ec up with Art, Tech Ed or Music and she didn't want any of the above. She doesn't like Art at all, is scared to death of the machines in Tech Ed and well General Music is *boring* to her. She takes choir as a completely seperate class. She couldn't just have study hall instead -- that is taken up by the choir/band/orchestra timeframe. So she *had* to pick something for 8th grade. She picked French I. We just haven't decided if she should re-take French I or not. From my understanding, it's the exact same book & workbook they are using. Her last report card she got a C+ so it's borderline for her. Then she was talking about how it goes by your last report card (if you get an A or B, they don't want you re-taking French I) so for all I know we could sign her up for French I, she ends up with a B since she was really close to a B this time around and they automatically bump her into French II. She got a B- 1st quarter. And to think the counselors last year tried to tell me for her NOT to take this class because they thought it would be too hard for her.

Donald's shrink- I am taking an Ed Psy class. It is very interesting, except for the testing and stats part. I am so NOT a math person!
[

Most psychologists (at least clinical psychologists) are not math people either. However stats are an important part of our research. I've actually taken entire stats courses just to learn how to do one type of analysis that we only spent one week out of a 16 week course discussing. The other 15 weeks were definitely less interesting for me. However, the more stats you know the more tools you have to do research. Plus I hear that Disney hires research statisticians all the time. :thumbsup2

How is everyone today?
I'm at work having lunch, and having some quiet time while Katie is taking a nap in my office. I love Tuesdays and Thursdays when she comes with me to work - it's so great having her here!!:goodvibes

We just found out the date for Stephanie's first communion, and it's April 26th. I can't believe it - my baby is making her first communion :sad1: :) (2 smilies for that one). So I'm starting to make some arrangements, and I can't get over how much this day is going to cost us, but I keep telling myself it's a once in a lifetime event for her, and I want it to be super special!!!!:goodvibes

Bunchkin - I'm so glad you're feeling better, and I will hope and pray that Lauren doesn't get sick:wizard: :wizard: I'm sure she's really looking forward to that concert, and she would be so sad if she couldn't go. Keep us posted on how she is doing.

Becky - Wow, your DD is going to be a Freshman next year:) . These kids of ours are growing up to fast - way to fast!!!!

To everyone else - :wave2:

Well, that's about it from me this afternoon - I need to go back to work, and get all the quiet jobs done, so I don't wake up the sleeping princessprincess:

Have a good rest of the day everyone!!

slo Just my luck.......
I just came home a short while ago from picking up Lauren from school. I knew it was coming. Sure enough she got sick several times at school. I knew the stomach pains she was having was a sign of worse to come.
So now she's in my bed playing with her Nintendo DS and watching tv.
She says she doesn't feel as sick as I was. So I'm hoping it will end by tomorrow. At least for me, I was on the mend the next day.

Let's hope Hunter doesn't get it!!! :sad2: It's no fun when they are little and don't know how to get to the bathroom on time before they hurl!! :headache:
TMI...I know!! ;)

That's great Stephanie will be making her first communion soon!
Ah, this is why me being a Baptist comes in handy.....no communions, no big parties, no tons of $$ going out!!! :rotfl: ;) ;) Just teasing you!
Congrats to Stephanie!!! princess:

BRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

I just came in from shoveling & yes I know it's still snowing but I figured it would be less I have to shovel later.

I just told DS-7 that we are skipping his basketball class tonight! It's not that critical for him to go & so far, they haven't cancelled the parent meeting at 7. His basketball class would get out at 6:45. DH was going to have to pick him up so I could leave earlier to go to the High School and frankly with this mess, it's just not worth the hassle. He's taken this class before, I can guarantee you he won't be the only one missing. It will just make it easier for me to have everyone home before I head on out.

Apparently, they didn't cancel after-school activities today either as DD would be getting out of school right now and I haven't gotten an e-mail notice from the district that all after-school stuff has been cancelled (I love the e-mail notifications of everything! I'm signed up for all 3 schools & the district -- sometimes that means I get multiple copies of stuff & doesn't really help when there is a power outage. Last time it was like this they cancelled after-school activities and I knew about it before DD called to tell me.) Of course, she left her phone home today so that's not helpful if they dismiss plaly practice early. She's there until 5.

And yes, she will be a Freshman next year!!! EGADS!!!! I'm so not ready for that. Oh well, not only will I have a Freshman, I will have another one hitting Middle School. It's going to be a crazy year next year.

Good Evening Everyone.

The snow has begun and I have already shoveled so I can have a head start tomorrow. But after all that I have since discovered that the school I work in is closed and I don't have to go to work tomorrow. My boys go to school in a different district and their school has yet to close. I really don't have doubt it will close, but now we get to wait and see.

Becky -- As for the HS credit at the college it is usually dual credit. She can get both college and HS credit at the same time for some classes. Our community college has several classes students can take for dual credit.

Stay safe and warm everyone.

Now that I am in for the day, I am very excited about the snow. I love snow! I am also thankful my DH got more oil for our blower. I much rather blow snow than cut grass, but prefer grass cutting temps to the fridged air that's out there now. I wonder if there is a way to blow grass ?

Thanks for the Heads up on Lost. I am so lost with lost... I dont think I watched a single episode last season. :scared1: I do have seasons 1-3 on DVD but I just cant get in the mood. I LOVED Lost, but then lost interest when they kept showing so many re-runs.

Maybe I will give it another try. (Think I can watch all of season 3 by 7 tongiht?)

We have had snow all day I think there's at least 3-4 inches now that I shoveled.

For the record I would rather mow grass than shovel any old day ;)

Laura They had a recap of Lost last night. Well I've a lot to do before 7:00

I'm in a quandry as I sit here. I still have that meeting to go to in an hour, I *think*.

DD came home on the regular bus because all after-school activities got cancelled. However, last time that happened, I got an e-mail from the district. This time nothing. She did say it was the very last period of the day they announced it.

So, I sit here wondering if they cancelled the parent's meeting tonight or not. There is absolutely nothing on their website about it, no e-mails and of course, the office closed at 4 pm, so I can't even call them. I tried, there was no message left on there about any closings either when I pressed to hear about school closings! Ha Ha! I knew there wouldn't be but ugh.

I *really* want to go to the meeting but I'm going to dread driving out in this mess for me to show up & them not even have the meeting but I guess I'm going to head out in about 15 minutes to give me time to get there and see if I end up being the only car in the parking lot.

I already shoveled once but it will need to be done again, etc... I also have to sew DS-11 a costume for tomorrow, they didn't give us much information as to when it was due. It was just listed in his planner but I had no clue when the presentations would be. It's tomorrow. I have fabric cut out but I can't sew it together until after the meeting, so it will be a late night.

Hi all,

Have you guys heard about the event at the DVC store at Woodfield Mall on Feb. 9th? The email I got said Mickey & Friends will be there. I also just got an email inviting me to a special event to meet Disney Imagineers and Chefs on Feb. 12th (apparently this is an invite only event). :cool1: Hopefully I'll be able to make it.

Evening all.
Bunchkin, I sure hope you and Lauren are feeling better by Saturday. I am also hoping that my DD stays well. Her friend that was joining us has that same bug right now, so hoping she feels better by Saturday, too.
Leigh, glad to know you were all OK. That had to have been scarey.
Snow really started coming down around here about 5PM. And, of course, tomorrow is my work day. Which means, up at 4:30AM so I have time to shovel before going in to work. I did call and ask to have my name put on the requesting off list. Not sure it will do much good. As I understood it, everyone was calling to have their name put on that list. Not sure who's turn it is. And I had worked extra this week trying to earn some extra cash for vacations.
Speaking of, just received our invite in the mail today for our friend's DS Disney Wedding to take place at the Grand Californian. Now what?!!!! I was really looking forward to BC in August. HMMMMM. 2 trips?!:rolleyes1 Maybe I will postpone the August one to end of October or first week of December. I'll think on it a bit. I definately want to go to the wedding. We've never stayed on a DL property before-always stayed with friends. Might be nice. They get a discount price as a wedding group.
Becky, maybe encourage DD to take Spanish as her foreign language in HS. Bilingual with Spanish is a huge plus in any company these days.
Slo, I've seen people do as much for a communion celebration as they do for a wedding. Some people really go nuts!!! Congrats to her on making it to this day. I am sure whatever you plan will be a beautiful day and a wonderful memory for her.
Well, better run. Need to make lunches (I am going on the hunch we will have school here tomorrow. Seems IL schools in our area are very reluctant to cancel any days unless they have to). My niece in IN once called for me to come get her because they had the day off due to FOG!!!!!! And my grown niece that lives in MD makes me laugh. She is a Social Worker for the state. They cancel gov. office jobs by her for just a couple of inches. She'll call me up to tell me she if off to shop on a weekday. Nobody on the roads because they are all scared to drive in the snow. She is from Chicago area, so it's nothing for her. :lmao:
Night all - and stay warm and safe tomorrow, whatever your day may bring.

i guess mine got lost in cyber space.............

working in the morning.
so far, skool is still on up here.

getting up at 4:30 to shovel..........you know the routine.

Let's just say I hope they cancel school tomorrow. What happened to all the snow plows?

They didn't cancel the parent meeting. One of the people said it's always crazy weather on that day. Apparently one year they had a snow day for the kids during the day but the parent night was still held.

The roads coming home were bad -- and it's so eerily quiet. Usually the snow plows have come along several times but they haven't tonight. I think that's what's making this so weird. I drove about 20-25 mph all the way home. Even the main state route that is usually fairly clear was still covered most the way. I did see one plow on the way home but usually I see tons with weather like this. I guess I'll have to see how many times I'm woken up by them driving by later.

i'm glad you made it back home safe becky.

it is real trecherous out there on the streets now.

time for green lights out.

one more card game and i'm hitting the hay.

we have skool today.

getting ready to leave early.

have a great day chicagoland homies.

Good snowy morning all!!! :wave2:

No school for our district! The kids will be thrilled!
I wasn't too sure if I was sending DD to school any way.
She never 'got sick' here at home. And was able to keep food down. :thumbsup2 So I'm guessing she got a much milder case of what I had to deal with. And let me say, I was doubled over in pain...not fun. :sad2:

Way too much snow happening this far south for my liking!!!
The kids and I may have to go shovel so DH will be able to get in the driveway later today.
I can't believe he went to work. Just a short while ago I spoke to him and he was doing 20mph on the Dan Ryan heading into the city. He saw one car in the wall.

LOST
Why does this show torture me??
Anyone else?
So many questions left unanswered, and those flash forwards....ARGH!!!
Anyone know if it was Locke in the cabin when Hurley was looking in? And it seems now not only Ben and Locke can hear that mystery voice guy....can't remember his name.....starts with a 'J' I think.....but now Hurley can hear him too??
Wished it was 2 hours long!!

Tiggerrn It appears Lauren will be fine for Sat. Now I'm hoping Hunter doesn't get it because he'll be stuck with his dad taking care of him!! ;)
Not sure if Lauren's friend is still taking that extra ticket and coming with us. I have not heard back from this girl's mother. When I spoke to her the other night she said her DD was coming with but there was still details to be ironed out. She was supposed to call me back but I haven't heard from her. :confused3 :headache:
I'm going to try and see if Lauren's friend who lives kitty-corner from us wants to go. So I'll call you and let you know what happens.
Tomorrow should be a hoot!! Can't wait to see you guys!!

slo Can't wait to see you tomorrow too! How is the snow by you? Do you think your employee with show up to work if the snow is too bad for her to drive in?

Laurabearz How I wish we had a snow blower!!! ::yes::

We don't have season 3 of Lost on DVD yet! And actually we never really watched season 1, so during season 2 we were also watching season 1 on DVD to catch up! It was really confusing!!!:rotfl: I've learned I cannot watch a prior season and current season at the same time AND keep my facts straight!!

With all this snow I'm thinking that our hill of a back yard will get much use today, not only from my own kids but from the other neighbor kids who come over asking to use the hill to sled!!!

Keep warm and safe everyone!! :goodvibes

Just think.........when it's August and the temps are sky rocketing and the humidity is unbearable we'll be all wishing for ............well, not this kind of weather for sure!!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

There must be a lot of accidents out there this morning. I live a short distance from the local hospital and all I've heard while sitting here is sirens blaring. :sad2:

Please don't drive today if you don't have to!! Especially those of us out here in the south burbs!!

Hi all. I read through this thread some times and thought you would get a kick out of my story.

Way back when I bought tickets for myself, DW and our 3 DD's to go downtown and see the new 3D Hannah Montana movie. I figured we would spend the afternoon downtown, grab some food and enjoy the movie.

Well you guessed it, the tickets are for this afternoon. We live about 25 miles north of the city and with the snow, it could be very challenging to get to the movie theater. Taking public transportation is not really an option because it doesn't get us close enough to the theater and putting my kids in a city taxi with weather like this is not going to happen.

The silver lining is that since the kids school is closed today, if we do make it down they won't miss an afternoon of school like they were going to. :rotfl2:

My girls are going to be very disappointed if we don't find a way to get downtown today.

Oh well, just thought I would share.

jtm If there is one thing the city of Chicago does well is to make sure that the downtown streets get cleared. So taking a taxi should be ok.
I was just in the city the other week after a lot of snow fell and we thought we would need a taxi too, but the streets and sidewalks were all clear. So we walked everywhere we went.

I hope you and family get to still go.
