Cake Bake Shop at the BoardWalk is now open

We recently had lunch here, and I wanted to give a brief review.

Our meal -
Petuna punch (non-alcohol lemonade) - $9
Croque madame - $29
Bellini - $19
BlackBerry Avacado Salade - $26
One scoop ice cream - $7
Pixie Fetti Sundae - $15
Pixie Fetti Cake Slice - $23
Pre tip total - $136

Pros:
- our table was one of 3 in the back. Gorgeous chandeliers and dangling crystals. Probably the best area in the restaurant
- food was very good and portions were a nice amount. Big enough to be filling but not so big as to be absurd or feel wasteful when you can’t take it away
- it was a beautiful space and everything was thoughtfully done

Cons:
- it was a very expensive lunch for what it was. I am not uncomfortable with resort pricing, but there was something about this that just seems excessive. A salad with no protein and no bread service needs to wow for $26, and this just didn’t.
- I assumed my Bellini would be served in a flute with a fun garnish, but it was served in a coupe and looked a little boring with nothing but the drink and a few gold flakes on top.
- we got the cake to go because we wanted the ice cream but felt like we had to try the cake. To be fair, I’m not a gourmet, but again, a $23 slice of cake needs to impress me more than this did. It was good, but not something I would ever seek out again. (It is also very confusing for me to know how to share a piece of cake. How do you cut it so it isn’t one person getting a huge glob of icing??)
- our service was fine, but again, it feels like the restaurant needs to be an experience, and the service needs to sell it, and ‘fine’ just isn’t going to cut it for us.

I feel like I am all over the place with this, but I guess my final thoughts are that I would likely return if I’m staying at the Boardwalk and want a fresh and pleasant meal. I would not come back if I weren’t within walking distance. I would also skip dessert and get an ice cream from beaches and cream.IMG_6432.jpeg

Btw their gift card scanner doesn’t work, so don’t count on using any other form of payment other than a credit card (the cashier couldn’t even enter one of my credit cards correctly and the line was getting long so I gave up).

We were there first week of Dec and were told we couldn’t use our gift card at that time either….

We are schedule to be staying at Boardwalk Inn for the first time (yay!) in late October.

I think we will try a lunch here since so convenient! The sandwiches sound good - I'm looking at you shrimp po' boy! 🤓

Good choice! BWI is my favorite EPCOT hotel, and Cake Bake is currently my favorite restaurant and bakery in the entire WDW 😂.

I had no problem using gift cards on 11-1 (restaurant and shop), 11-30 (restaurant), and 12-4 (restaurant). Maybe an issue of specific cashier/server who doesn't know how to enter them?
Don’t know…my issue was at bakery evening of Dec. 10th and I ended up just using my Disney Visa.

Just back from visiting WDW. Enjoyable as always during the holidays as long as you pay attention to time - as in get out of MK by noon on Christmas Day, lol.
Stayed at BW for the first week which made dropping into CBS pretty simple. On Christmas Eve picked up a slice of one of their holiday offerings, gingerbread cake. Had 6 layers and each layer as well as the sides and top were covered in a cream cheese buttercream frosting. There was also a miniature gingerbread man cookie decoration that the two kiddos shared and enjoyed.
The cake had a nice crumb, was properly moist but not as much spice as I like. Not a major fan of icing but it had a good tang and worked well with the cake. The decorations were professionally rendered. The price was not inexpensive (about $ 22.00) but easily shared by the three of us, two adults and one child.

We returned on NY Day for the afternoon tea.
Seated promptly upon arrival and surrounded by pairs of women wearing fascinators, lace gloves and sequined Mickey ears in an array of colors. Obviously they were ready for some fun!

To preclude any problems with cool tea, I asked our server to provide warm tea cups which she graciously complied with. I liked the informative explanation of the different teas and the chance to smell each version. Helped our youngest guest to feel comfortable choosing her tea and the refresher course suited the oldsters as well; not hard to get into a “tea rut” even though we both stayed with our regular blend that they called, Oriental. The 6 year old choose what I believe was a special holiday blend called Amichai. English Breakfast and at least one green tea were also available.
The teas were presented in oversized teabags placed within the individual pots. Yes, the pots only held about 12 ounces but they were rapidly refilled as needed.

Our pastry service began with a warmed orange and cranberry sconce served with clotted cream, European style butter and glittered raspberry jam. I’ll be honest, a vlogger complained mightily about receiving Bonne Maman jam instead of one made on premises and I honestly didn’t understand then or now what the problem was. I suspect they were not aware of the reputation of the product; certainly wasn’t Welch’s 🤷🏽‍♀️.

The girls (19 y/o DGD and the 6 y/o) both opted for the children’s menu for sandwiches. The elder wanted to avoid any cheese products and the younger preferred peanut butter and jelly. My tiered stand included egg salad, goat cheese and fresh herb spread, chicken salad and ham and cheese. The girls ate all their finger sandwiches while I left the egg salad (not my idea of fun).

The sandwiches were freshly made and not heavily spiced or seasoned which allowed the next course to shine which of course were the individual pastries: lemon curd, chocolate volcano mini cake with vanilla icing and peppermint brittle, fruit tarts, blueberry crumble, and others I no longer recall. Suffice to say it was a sweet tooth’s delight with many being boxed and brought back to the hotel for the next day’s breakfast.

All in all, I found the food and service on par for the money spent. I doubt I’ll return for tea again unless it’s a special occasion but feel confident that a breakfast or lunch would be satisfactory.

We went for New Year’s Day brunch. We had a great time! Service was jovial and well-paced. I had egg whites with gluten free toast ($3.99 upcharge for GF), which also comes with potatoes and a lovely little salad. The base price is $16.99 before the GF upgrade and I thought that it was a fair price for what I received. DS had the Belgian waffle and barely finished it- again, $16.99 was the cost. Hubster had the crab cakes Benedict and said that they were fantastic- just the right amount of crisp without any mushiness to any of it. We paid less here than at Sci-Fi the following day with two of us ordering appetizers as entrees. I had been expecting less and was very pleasantly surprised.

We ate here 2 times recently on our 3 day trip! Jan 1 we did walk up and had a 2 hour wait for dinner but DD11 was determined. We sat in the side room which was a bit loud but still beautifully decorated and the tables were not crammed on top of each other which is nice ( I hate tables that are in one line and have 3 inches between the next table). DH had chicken piccata (he said it was good but the chicken was slightly drier than he liked), I had the 3 cheese cavatappi (loved it, DD and DH also tried it and really like it), and DD11 had the kids buttered cavatappi (she said it was a bit too buttery but she loved th baguette and the fruit side was a step up from most fruit sides at Disney with much bigger berries). We all split the raspberry champagne cake and DH and DD shared a pot of tea—we all really liked the cake, it was very light and not too sweet. DD and DH loved the tea, and it was very relaxing way to end the meal. Service was very nice and not too slow—we were there about 1 1/2 hours.

Jan 3 we walked up at 430 with no wait and were seated at a corner booth in the bar. Service was slower in this room since our server also was working the bar. They also forgot DHs wine and we had to ask for spoons to eat our soup. Definite difference in service compared to previous visit. DD had the gumbo entree (he liked it a lot) and an Old Fashioned, I had the French Onion soup (really enjoyed it and baguette was delicious) and pink margarita, and DD11 had a kids turkey and cheese sandwich (she liked it better than the cavatappi). Again split a pot of tea and the raspberry cake.

I didn’t feel that the prices were out of line. My soup was $13, the cavatappi from the night before was $24, gumbo entree was $24. Drinks were $18-20. Kids entree were $13-14 and higher quality than the other kids entrees we have had at Disney. The Cobb salad at Hollywood Brown Derby is $28 this trip. We ate at Geyser Point as well and my salad was $18 there and my drink was $17. Yes the cake is $23 but all 3 of us shared it and didn’t even finish it. The pot of tea was $10 and they got about 4 cups out of it.

One other thing, there was a question about having less people than the OT reservation was made for. Our reservation was for 4 people, but we were only 2. I just said that when we checked in. The hostess just said OK as she checked us in. No charge for the extra 2 & no further comment was made.
This happened to me in November. I made a reservation for 2 on OpenTable but the restaurant had it down as 4. The hostess was cool but implied it was my error. 😏

Stopped by the bakery to get a slice of raspberry champagne cake and a peppermint macaron, got the reusable bag too because why not.

Cake was just fine. Like a 3/5. The frosting is more of a whipped cream as opposed to buttercream, and the cake itself is very light though not as fluffy and moist as I’d prefer. I imagine it has something to do with the height of the layers, as the fluffy cakes I prefer are usually not built as tall. It could have used more raspberry filling as that was the highlight that gave it more flavor, the cake itself was very plain and unremarkable. I think I wanted this to be like the Whole Foods berry chantilly cake and it doesn’t come anywhere near that. I agree it’s not too sweet at all, and it goes down easily as the frosting is so light.

The macaron was also unremarkable, similar to the over the top macarons I’ve had from Toothsome’s. Relatively large and has a nice chew but $6 is a bit laughable, just like the cake.

Will I get suckered into the cake bake shop bakery again? I’m sure I will, it’s just so pretty. Prices don’t have to make sense to me when I’m on vacation. I’d like to try this chocolate dipped croissant:

NYCgrrl that was Monsieur Paul that put a jar of Bonne Maman fig jam on their cheese tray not CBS. And MP absolutely deserved to be blasted for that. I would hope that CBS wouldn’t do something like that.

Ok, someone else mentioned it... I'll join you! Bonne Maman is a mass produced product that you can buy in 32oz jars at Costco. It is good as a grocery store jam but I would take any homemade jam over it and I would not be impressed paying top dollar for it in a purported fine dining establishment.
