2024 AD: Nickelodeon creates a show about this
Never understood the term Midwest for this very reason. Midwest should be half way between the West Coast and the center of the country. NONE of it should be EAST of the midline. That would be the Mideast.

Yeah, we have "East Sacramento". Name goes back 100 years because a big chunk of Sacramento is east of East Sacramento. The name likely harkens back to a time when that was as far west as the country went. Like, here in town, there is an area referred to as "East Memphis." It was once the easternmost growth of the city. Now the city has progressed significantly further eastward, but the name hasn't changed. It just referrs to the area, not it's actual gerographic space.

Brian is 100% correct, add to the fact that people on the Eastern Seaboard of the US don't even know what the west coast is.The name likely harkens back to a time when that was as far west as the country went. Wait what do you mean? You think people on the East Coast of the US are unaware of Hollywood, California being on the opposite side of the country?Brian is 100% correct, add to the fact that people on the Eastern Seaboard of the US don't even know what the west coast is.
My father, being the obnoxious person he was, would always refer to anything east of Idaho as "Out East" just his way of poking fun that "Out West" was anything west of the Missouri river.
