Someone told me they purposely moved it a week later so that it falls before Presidents Day so people (I know not all) have the day off after. Whether that is true or not is up for debate. Considering who told me I am leaning towards not.

Never understood the term Midwest for this very reason. Midwest should be half way between the West Coast and the center of the country. NONE of it should be EAST of the midline. That would be the Mideast.

The name likely harkens back to a time when that was as far west as the country went. Like, here in town, there is an area referred to as "East Memphis." It was once the easternmost growth of the city. Now the city has progressed significantly further eastward, but the name hasn't changed. It just referrs to the area, not it's actual gerographic space.

Yeah, we have "East Sacramento". Name goes back 100 years because a big chunk of Sacramento is east of East Sacramento.

Brian is 100% correct, add to the fact that people on the Eastern Seaboard of the US don't even know what the west coast is.

My father, being the obnoxious person he was, would always refer to anything east of Idaho as "Out East" just his way of poking fun that "Out West" was anything west of the Missouri river.

No, I believe he means that the typcial East coaster has no regard for anything that is further West. They know about it, but they don't care about it, and don't think about it. I am not 100% sure that they realize that there are other time zones besides Eastern though!
