I just bought a new home computer and I am broke. DSL is sooooooo much cheaper. What does everyone use and why?

For those who live in my area my providers would be Comcast or Verizon.

cable here...Mediacom.

We love the speed and my dh refuses to do less, so we pay the 60 bucks or so a month.... :earseek: can't really say why except for speed and easy access.

On average DSL is cheaper but it depends on the package you get from your cable company.

I have a cable modem thru Cablevision and it costs me $44.95 per month, but I also have my phone servce (unlimited calls) thru Cablevision also and it costs me just $15 per month. I was paying $52+ for phone service thru AT&T. So I am paying $60 a month for phone and internet which is a pretty good deal since I find the cable modem faster and more reliable than DSL.

I actually switched from cabel to DSL, not because of price, but more consistant service.

I now have FIOS, which is REALLY nice. And it's the same price my DSL was.

I would go DSL if it's cheaper. :badpc:

We have Verizon DSL for price. We have cable at work, and I can tell a difference, but not $15/month difference. DSL works fine for us. We have it on a router with one wireless laptop and one regular computer. It has only gone down once in a year. I have had to reset the router/modem a couple of times, but that was not the fault of DSL.

we have cable modem and digital cable tv bundled for $94/month.

DH won't go to DSL since he's a big online gamer and DSL is a tad slow for gaming.

I have DSL at my dad's house in Little Rock. I just bought a condo in New Orleans - great timing right?

I closed and then left New Orleans a few days before Katrina and without starting any internet service, but if and when I get back I plan to do the package plan through the cable company. It ends up being cheaper than separate phone and cable.

First I have to get electricity and water!

We have DSL through Verizon and my MIL has cable through Atlantic Broadband. Our connection usually feels faster than hers. Hers seems to be pretty inconsistent...slow sometimes, fast sometimes. Ours is consistently consistent. ;)

We have Verizon DSL and have been VERY happy with it. Never in a year and half has it gone out.
We are paying about $35 for the DSL. We have a discount because we have some phone services bundled with it.
From what I understand, DSL is your home's dedicated line and the speed should not vary depending upon other DSL users in your area being on-line. Cable is more like dial-up - the more people that are on at the same time as you, the slower the speed.

We had DSL in the last house, and really liked it. But SBCGlobal's customer service was HORRIBLE. Now we have a cable modem (no DSL available where we moved) and like it fine - it is less tricky to hook up, and Comcast has been great with customer service. We pay $50/month for cable TV + internet for 6 months, then it goes up to regular prices (unless we threaten to cancel, perhaps??).

I am switching from RCN cable to ComCast cable because Comcast bundle is much cheaper. I have used DSL and found it much slower, but I depend it depends where you live. I know I will have local, long distance phone, internet and digital cable with DVR for under $125 - oh and free prints from Snapfish!!!

I just now hooked my DSL line up at home. And this is the first time I am using it. I am totally amazed how quickly I am moving along.
I have Verizon DSL and I am only paying $14.95 a month.

First we had cable, then we got DSL...It was MUCH better, and less money...then we moved and could only get cable. The cable is now better than it used to be, but WAY to expensive! It the only thing we can get here though.... :badpc:

Okay there's no good reason to insert this guy here, but he's so fun:
:dancer:

We just signed up for verizon's DSL $14.95 package......

It has speeds up to 768 bp or k (whatever)......By signing up on-line the first month is free....

The $29.99 a month Package lets you get faster speeds but you might not depending on your phone lines....

But I can tell you this...with the $14.95 plan I get faster speeds than at work where we have a T-1 line....

I posted above about this same deal. I was very surprised at how fast it was moving.

Verizon dsl 2 weeks ago I was paying 29.99 now I just change it to the new 14.95 promotion. People say it is slower than the 29.99, and I am still waiting for it (DSL speed) to get slow!
I love it! 14.95 dsl! Wow! :Pinkbounc
Maybe I should order one for my niece she is still using AOL dial up for 23.00 dollars. :3dglasses

we had Comcast bundled with the tv and phone for about 135.00 per month. Then I got a letter saying they would no longer be offering the bundle discount so I switched to Verizon DSL for less money. The DSL is not the $14.95 promotion, but I may look into that to see if I can qualify. We got the $19.95 per month for 3 months and then $29.95 month after that with a discount for having the phone and cell phone with Verizon too.
I did notice ithe DSL was slightly slower than Comcast, but not enough to make a difference to me. I hate Comcast, so I was glad to be away from them. I may look into Direct TV to get away completely!!

I've had road runner cable for years. It started out shaky, until they found a broken wire. Even so, once all the kids in the neighborhood get home from school, it slows. Nothing like dial up of course.

I would switch to DSL in a NY minute, if it were availble in my area both for costs and the fact that my cable occasionally goes out, and my phone never does. I run a biz from home, so I'm paying for AOL dial up as well to cover my butt in the down times. I have full aol at a discount, but it still means my rates are higher.

Don't bet on that with Comcast. I tried that and it didn't work. Comcast bought out our local cable company and jacked the rates by $12/month (they told me it was a faster connection- yeah, right). The attitude I received when I called and complained was basically oh well, let us know what you decide to do. I live in a rural area where DSL isn't available, unfortunately. I've thought about going back to dial-up (almost a $40 difference :earseek: ) and then change my mind when I use my parent's computer (they have dial-up). If push comes to shove, it would be the first thing to go but for now, I'll bite the bullet and pay the price.

We have verizon DSL and love it. The only other service we've had is dial up (with the rip-off 5 X faster line) and I can't imagine going back to that! Around here, it costs $70 to have regular cable hooked up when you move and we've moved 3 times in 5 years...wouldn't pay the fees so needless to say, we have DishNetwork for our TV.
