BYOB question

What is your take on what BYOB means?

My brother is having a cookout. Invites came through Facebook and it says...BYOB. Now, I've always known it to mean Bring Your Own Booze/Beer.

Well, I'm talking with him the other day and he's going over the list of dishes that everyone is bringing, that way I can decide on what to bring. He mentions that he'll have bottled water and juice (like a summer punch made in one of those big containers with a spigot). I say, what about soda? And he says to me, "Well, that's why I wrote BYOB" I was like . So I tell him that not everyone drinks alcohol and that they'll want a soda to probably wash down their dinner. He tells me that BYOB "universally" means, bring your own drink (whether it be alcohol, soda or whatever)

Now, I have never heard of that in my life. Not saying that it's not true but I've just always thought it meant that they're not supplying the beer/booze, but if you'd like to partake in a drink or two, bring your own.

Can you tell me what it means to you?

I have only ever known it to mean bring your own alcohol, whenever I have been to a function with BYOB then soft drinks have been provided

Some people interpret it to mean "bring your own beverage." When I invite family over for meals. I often make the same request. I don't drink soda and I don't want the leftovers. Most people have extras of their favorite drinks at home and iits no trouble to bring some along. I think this is particularly common with potluck type parties where everyone brings a dish.

Like your brother, I normally have water (often flavored cause that's what I drink) and one other option (juice boxes for the littles to avoid spills). At most parties I will have/bring a bottle of wine that I like and share that as well.

I guess I see his request as normal. We do a lot of these types of parties in my family.

I have always it meant booze specifically. I would assume other beverages were provided!

I thought it meant bring your own "booze" meaning that non-alcoholic drinks will be provided and it you want beer/wine/hard liquor etc. you bring it yourself. If I was intending for folks to bring their own drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, I would write out "bring your own beverages" instead of byob.

That said, at least he is providing two non-alcolholic choices. I think people will be fine with either water or juice. You don't HAVE to serve soda. You could always bring along a couple of cases of soda for everyone, that's probably what I would do if I were you.

I would assume at a party that beverages other than alcohol would be provided.

In our circle, its bring your own alcohol. I have never been to a party where people were supposed to bring their own beverage, and I would assume that drinks, other than alcohol would be provided by the host.

Bring your own booze. I have never known it to mean anything else. Maybe you could bring a few 2liters of soda as your contribution to the greater good.

I agree. BYOB is pretty universally understood to be referring to liquor. It's fine that they're only serving water and punch. Since this is a potluck-type event why don't you bring soda if you think the menu is lacking?

I would assume bring your own booze. The only gathering I've gone that it meant bring whatever you plan to drink at all was a neighborhood bbq, and it was specifically noted that no drinks would be provided.

"Universally" acknowledged to mean bring ANY beverage you want??? Nope....maybe on the planet your brother's orbiting on, but not earth.

I've always used it in the restaurant context so definitely bring your own booze. You wouldn't bring soda to a restaurant that is BYOB but you would bring a bottle of wine.

I would interpret that as alcoholic beverages since it can get pretty expensive if the host had to provide it.

Can you tell me what it means to you?

I, myself, have typically understood it to be booze. However, I have been to enough parties where others interpret it as beverage to know that booze is not a universal meaning.

It sounds like your brother is offering two types of non-alcoholic beverages, water and punch, so he is definitely fulfilling his host duties. Not everybody likes or provides soda at parties.

So, I can definitely see where his interpretation would be bring your own beverage since he is providing perfectly good non-alcoholic beverages.
