Buzz's Brigade 2009 - Moving to Infinity and Beyond!!!

Wooooooohoooooo, Buzzies == Those are some awesome numbers!

Can't wait to hear all about ESPN!

Syko - Congrats on the new PR! I hope the ESPN race went good.

Wendy - Awww..sorry you are still experiencing so much pain. You are doing awesome though by still walking as much as you can. Good luck with the Princess 1/2. Let us know how everything goes.

HGH & Allie - Nice work on your monthly miles/time!

Debbie - I hope your foot is doing better. Glad you had a good time at Zumba too.

Jessica - Sounds like you have a great routine going now with the pilates.

Here are my February totals!

189.26 MILES
35 hours 25 minutes

150 miles of that was running...that is the most I've ever run in one month. The rest of the hours/miles were from swimming, biking, and weight training.

Miles for Feb: 208
Hours for Feb: 22:40

I did win the ESPN, but Disney will not reconise it as they do not have a crank class, so I am upset.
I could not make it around the firts turn, as you had to double back on yourself on a single road, I started backing two and forth to try to get around and in the end the CM watching asked me what he could do to help, so he lifted me around the corner.....if it was not for him I would still be stuck there now!!!!!!
It was really nice to meet Lisa (hungrygreen hippo), and I finished in 15:17, the fastest runner was 17:00.

Syko - Congrats on finishing FIRST!!! :cool1: :cheer2: Pooh pooh: on Disney for not having a crank class :sad2: , but YEAH for Disney for having a helpful CM. :thumbsup2 Oh, and a BUZZ WISH meet! :goodvibes :thumbsup2

Wow!!!!!! Congrats on your first place, Syko! Sorry Disney didn't recognize it, but it is still an awesome accomplishment!

Hi Team,
There are some great numbers out there.
Casey - looks like you are pretty much ready for the Tri - Right?
Syko - you know you finished first and that is what counts.
Debbie and Wendy - get better will ya? :)
Jessica - I know what you are talking about. If I don't have anything on the schedule it is easy to get burned out. There is nothing to run for....
Allie - those are great numbers. Are you training for anything special?
Mike - where are you?
Pat - 30 miles is respectable!
Chris - get off the couch and get out there. Oops, am I allowed to say that? OK, I know you are also playing basketball so that's OK.

If I forgot anyone I'm sorry. I'm not good about going back and keeping track of others posts.

Here are my numbers for Feb. I forgot a week the last time I looked, glad I recalculated:
Running: 61 miles - 595 minutes
Bike: 10 miles - 50 minutes
Workout: 870 minutes (every other day)

Ran a half marathon today so I already have 26.2 miles for March!!

enjoy,
Duane

Hi Team,
Here is my race report. What a great day! I was privileged to run the Hooter's to Hooter's half marathon today. This is the second running of this race. Up till last year Ft Myers didn't have anything over a 10K.

The race starts at Hooter's of course, runs through a historic neighborhood by the river, then into downtown, over a monster bridge, turn around, then back over the monster bridge, past the Red Sox stadium then back to Hooter's. Why the hurry to finish? Well Hooter's girls meet you at the finish and put the medal around your neck, then you proceed over to the beer and wing tent where Hooter's girls serve you. Did I mention there were Hooter's girls? Seriously, it is just a fun race. Of course hot wings at 9:30 in the morning are good too. The only drawback to the race is getting up at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The forecast called for rain but the day turned out windy but otherwise perfect. Overcast for a good part of the race which kept the temps down. OK, compare this to Disney: There were 4 bands, 8 water stops, one every 2 miles and an extra stop at mile 7 and 9 (same stop as that is the start and finish of the bridge over and back). We received a great running shirt, quite a bit of stuff in the goody bag including a subway sub. OK the sub wasn't actually in the bag but the coupon was. There were Sharkies, suntan spay, couple of types of food bars, discounts to a gym, free protein shake, etc And they gave it all to you in a nice Hooter's running bag. This is a nice fabric backpack type bag with a place for your water. Pretty darn cool. Oh and don't forget the party and food at the end! They charge a whopping $30 for the race. It was a decent turnout for here, with a little over 600 runners today.

I was not in real running shape for this race. I took a lot of time off from the Disney weekend because of my knee issues and didn't start running until it was too late to build up decent mileage. I sure felt it around mile 11. The knee is still pretty sore on any runs over 6 miles too but I thought I could manage. Anyway, I was going to try and stay with a couple of friends because they planned on running sub 2:00. That was my goal, well my first was to finish then my second goal was under 2:00. My PR is 1:55 something.

When we started my 2 friends took off pretty fast. I wanted to keep an 8:45 ish pace because I knew I'd need a few extra minutes at the end. We'll they were running right about 8:00 minutes. I said to myself, "take your time, you'll catch them". I'll tell you that was tough holding back. Well I passed the first one right around mile 5 and the second right around mile 6. He stayed with me until mile 7 then I never saw him until the finish. Tortoise and Hare come to mind :)

We hit the bridge at mile 7. It is a very steep incline going this way. Luckilly the wind wasn't bad going up but it was still tough. A long downhill before the turnaround. Not sure why, but most people do not take advantage of the downhill's. I smoke em downhill (still slow for some) but careful not to over stride. Take advantage of the downhill you can gain a lot of time. Well at the end of the bridge we turned around and headed back up. Now this side was a long gradual climb although still fairly steep. It was brutal. The wind was blowing like crazy right in your face. Hats were blowing off. I tried to draft a few folks but it didn't work at all. The wind was tough. We had a strong headwind wind the the last 5 miles.

Anyway, nothing else major happened except I did have to walk for about 20 seconds 3 times in the last 5 miles. I was beat. That head wind was killing us. Actually it was the worse about the last 3 tenths of a mile. Longest 3 tenths of my life. I ended up at 1:59:01. That was close! But I knew I was close and knew I had a few extra seconds to walk. So I did beat everyone from the office including the 22 year old.

As I mentioned, they put on a great spread at the end. Beer, wine, water, PowerAde, wings, oranges, bagels, cookies, grapes, etc. Great food! If you went away hungry, it was your own fault. They also had a 2 person band and lot's of raffle giveaways. Shoot everyone hung out for quite a while. Great day!

enjoy,
Duane

Wow, that does sound like a great race, Duane (my DH really thought so)! I cringe when I think about what we pay for Disney -- so I just try not to think about it :)

Syko, awesome race for you, even with the frustrations!

Casey, your monthly totals are huge . You go, girl!

I'm sitting here watching the snow fall. I hate for the kids to have to make up another day of school, but I'm supposed to go to the dentist first thing in the a.m., so I wouldn't mind having that canceled.

This weather is weird -- we have snow and thunder!

Congrats Syko and Hungry Green Hippo on the ESPN 5K!!! :cheer2:
Congrats to Duane on the Hooter's 1/2!!! :cheer2:
Congrats to everyone else for all those mileage and minutes!!! Those are some serious numbers :worship:

6 miles yesterday. I'm pretty much done training for the Princess 1/2. It will be interesting to see how I do considering my training schedule was only 7 weeks. It was tough to get started again after a 3 month break but I'm really impressed with how quickly I was able to bring my mileage back up.

3 more days of work and I can leave this cold and nasty weather for 80 degrees and sunshine :dance3:

My February stats:
Miles - 66.53
Time - 1,520 minutes

Have a great week...

:stitch: 'Ohana's Monday Mixer :stitch:

We had so much fun with last week’s Monday Mixer, ‘Ohana is doing it again tomorrow! Come early, stay late, visit on any day of the week. No need to stick to the topic, either. We’re just happy to hear from our cousins and swap a tale or two over some tasty beverages. :drinking1

Tomorrow, we’re curious to find out how you pass the time on long walks/wogs/runs if you don’t listen to music and are training solo. (Or what you do in addition to/as an alternative to listening to music.) What makes the long miles less daunting and maybe even enjoyable? What do you watch for, think about, concentrate on? From the serious to silly to the surreal, we want to hear your stories.

Me, I’m pretty sure I hallucinate, but the rest of you probably have better strategies...

Hope to see you on the ‘Ohana thread. The mixer posts for this week start here.

Mike - where are you?

Hey Duane! Here I am. Been lurking and watching eveyone's miles! WOW! Great race report. Sounds like loads of fun and isn't that what running is supposed to be.:yay:

Great race Syko!:thumbsup2 You/We know you're a winner:thumbsup2 You were flyin!

Debbie- We must be real close. I'm working in Charlotte tonight for our local utility and looking at all the snow wondering about making in home. Y'all know us Suuuuutherners just don't know how to drive in this stuff. I live down in SC so it's a straight shot down I-77. Then I've got some time off and they're calling for it to be 70 degrees by the weekend. WooHoo.

Casey/Allie/Lisa/Lisa/Pat
-Awesome miles. Way to prop up your team:cheer2: !

So here's my paltry contribution to the team. I promise to do better next month!:flower3:

Miles 22.9
Time 4:41

Duane - Yes, I am training for the Country Music Half Marathon at the end of April. I am so afraid I am messing up my knee during this process. Although, my ice baths have been my friend. I just wish I could figure out what I am doing wrong. :confused3 I'm still plugging away though. Think...the little engine that could....:goodvibes

Yep, Mike, I grew up in Columbia and still have family there, so I know I-77 well. As usual, they missed out on the snow :(

FYI to everyone: The March issue of Runner's World focuses on injury prevention and includes an article optimistically titled "Never Get Hurt." I'll believe that when I see it, but there is a set of exercises designed to improve pelvic stability that I'm going to try doing routinely. Worth a try! This article is just in the magazine itself, not online (yet, anyway).

Have a good week, Buzzies!

Debbie - Thanks, I just recently got my Runner's World and hadn't had a chance to read it. Now, I know where to look. I think I am nervous because my neighbor has a tear in her knee, and is having surgery on Thursday to repair it. I figure I don't think I have damaged it, or it would hurt when I run. No pain while running, just afterwards. Thanks for the directions to that article. ;)

You're very welcome, Allie! I figure this little routine is worth trying. Good luck with your knee -- it is so frustrating to worry about damaging something. But I think you're right -- if you are not having to cut runs short, you're probably okay. If it doesn't hurt after cross training, I'll bet you could drop one of your shorter runs and cross train an extra day. Or just take an extra rest day. As long as you get the long runs in, IMO you'll be fine stamina-wise. Of course, I haven't done a lot of races, so I'm definitely no expert
