I was just looking into this and thinking, hey, I have a TomTom already, why not just buy a map!?

Has anyone done this? Am I missing some very obvious reason why this wouldn't work?? And one last dumb question for April, do US cars still have cigarette lighters we could plug the adapter in to??

Also, if this is possible and others have done it, does anyone know of any discount codes for buying the map direct from TomTom??

Thanks! :thumbsup2

There is no reason why you can't buy a map and stick it on your TomTom. I have a Garmin and I found you can purchase the Maps for about £50-60.

I can't answer your question about the cigarette lighters. I would assume it's all the same plug type as what we have in Europe/UK.

PM sent about discount codes.:thumbsup2

I bought an SD card with a US map on for my TomTom & it worked perfectly in December. :thumbsup2

I was trying to send a PM but my post count is too low... Anyway, all I was going to say the maps are free online (torrents). If you aren't familiar with torrents then the easier (and legal) way of getting the maps are buy and SD card with them pre-installed, as the other poster has mentioned.

I have a Tom Tom One, it doesn't have a SD slot. Is my only option to buy from Tom Tom ? South East USA maps are about £40.00 on Tom Tom website.

Yes American cars do still have power-outlet/cgarette lighter- I saw it on another post.

How does the cost of renting a SatNav from the car rental company compare to buying the maps?

I downloaded Florida maps for my TomTom online and installed on the SD card.
From memory I think it was during a 30% off promotion :)

Thanks for the replies folks - may well give this a go. I'd prefer to do it the legal way but if anyone knows of any promotions or discounts floating around then please do let me know! :wizard:

Me too! Tom Tom site is currently selling for £34.95 for Southeast USA.

Really? It was £39.95 when I looked last night?

Either way, I think it makes a lot more sense compared to what you would pay for rental over there.

I reckon I know where I'm going for most things and would usually print off maps from mapquest but this just sounds easier....plus, I always manage to confuse myself going to Busch Gardens!!

I bought the South East maps a month ago and it's sad but fun planning trips in advance (yes I'm a geek).

Work fine on my Tomtom 720 and also got an American Computer voice so it reads everything out.

Publix supermarkets and other POIs are downloadable although it already has the them parks etc.

I can't remember the exact price but I compared the costs early last year & it was about £80-90 for 2 weeks with Budget....I decided to invest in a TomTom & the us card instead as then I can use it for each trip. :thumbsup2

I see in the new Virgin brochure they are offering their rental customers free SatNavs if you book before June and take the Platinum insurance (£££££!)

I've seen international sellers selling tomtoms on ebay.com with pre loaded US and Canada maps on them for around $60 plus international delivery. Most have excellent ratings. I plan to buy mine this way and then put it back on ebay when I've finished with it.

Shame you're not back before I go Rotothread!:goodvibes

Yep price is £34.95, I used 'New Maps New Prices' button on top right hand corner of Tom Tom website. (price for Tom Tom One Version 3- in case they charge different amounts for different models;))

Thought I might get the kids to treat their Dad for Fathers Day:laughing:
