buying more points than you need?

just wondering if most of you bought "just enough points" for your needs or picked up more with the intention of selling them or renting them to help offset your maintenance fees.

We bought less then we needed because that’s what we could afford at the time. I think I’ve heard of some people doing that, but I wouldn’t reccomend it. I think you’ll mostly hear to buy how much you need for your accomodations and time of year.

We bought about 10% more than we needed so we could get premium views if the standards were all booked.

I would not buy extra to rent out. This only makes sense if you ignore the purchase price of the points and only consider the maintenance fees. Which is to say, it does not make sense.

We bought what we needed, with a few extra. Within a year, we added on, because we decided that we'd like a couple of extra days every year. We're now looking to add on again. (sigh)

Our initial buy, 200 pts in 2006, was what we thought would be enough. And it was for several years. Then we needed to upgrade to 2BR villas and then we wanted to do multiple trips a year on our APs. So we have since added on multiple times and about to add more. We use all our points. We had a goal to have enough for 8 weeks in the late fall through early spring (for retirement in about 11 years). Calculated 1500 points needed. We will have 650 after this next add on. We are reconsidering the 1500 pts for 8 weeks. Think we do 1/2 that much and stop.

We bought more than the 4 of us needed when my boys were 5. We knew that we would need more room as they grew. We also wanted to take my mother-in-law every few years and take my parents occasionally. We do rent out on the years we don’t use them all, but we have also used every last one and borrowed just for ourselves.

You would need enough 'extra' points for at least 2 or 3 night to be make renting worth while. I don't think David's or other broker would handle any less than that, if they would do that small amount.

The problem I seem to be having is finding the goldilocks contract, either they aren't quite enough or more than we would need.

Our initial purchase was what we needed. Then we added on a few times to get two times a year instead of just one. But none to rent out. We use them.

Our first purchase was a small "get your feet wet" contract. We knew that if we liked DVC after the initial purchase, we could always add on. If not, it would be easy to sell that small contract. Since that first contract, we've added on, and added on and added on. What we've learned is that what you think you need now may not be what you actually need down the road. This year, when we have a wedding to pay for. It's nice to recover not only our MFs but a little extra by renting out the unneeded points. And it's just as nice to know that those points are there for a trip next year. But our intention was never to consistently rent out our points to offset our dues by having more points than we would normally use.

This seems to happen with a lot of owners. They become a member and then keep using and using until they need to add on. I think this is the best way to go. Simply buy a few extra points initially and reevaluate after a few years of use.

Yep, we bought our SSR 'intro' contract for 150 points... then discovered we really needed to own at BCV to get food/wine studios, so added on a small one there. Then really wanted VGF studios, and couldn't book those either, so jumped on a beautiful loaded contract there - but it was larger than we 'needed.' The rationale was to use the BCV and VGF points for ourselves and rent SSR to offset dues. LOLOLOL... while we've rented several times, I always find new excuses to use the SSR points (and all the other ones too) for ourselves. I mean, those CCV cabins are just the best, right?

And yeah, we bought a contract there too...

It's a disease, that addon-it-is.

We started with 160 AKV points. Within a year we added on 300 SSR points with the idea that we would rent 150 of them each year and that would cover our dues on the points we use. It’s been about 6 years now and we have yet to rent any points. We aren’t even close to renting points! We are always borrowing.

So unless you have amazing will power I would caution against buying extra points to rent for dues money. You could end up just having higher dues to pay. On the flip side, it’s fun to spend all the extra points!

Started with 190 points in 1999.. Then bought 100 more at BWV... Then bought at HHI.. Just recently bought at CCV. Think we are done...
We have enough points now for 2 trips/year or even 3 if we stretch points..

We initially bought 250 points at BCV...thought that would be too many points for a once a year trip but soon found out that we love 1 BDRM units for the four of us. Soon after that we discovered VGF and how much we loved the resort and the monorail access. After that we discovered the annual pass benefit and taking more than one trip per year. After a contract sale and a few new contract buys we now sit with 310 VGF points. Hopefully we are done for a bit. :)

Our initial purchase at BCV was done after we stayed at Yacht Club and loved the location of the resort. Our "mistake" was we did a split stay on one trip and stayed at VGF then BCV and found the BCV to be a significant drop-off to what we had at VGF. Not to say it was bad just less then what we had in the first part of the trip. Also were not thrilled about BCV DVC units placement at the back of the resort so we sold that contract for a nice profit and now have enough points for a 1 BDRM visit at VGF for most of the year or two studio visits.

The math on buying more points than you need is that you are somewhat more likely to do better offsetting your maintenance fees by putting that money into the stock market - especially after you add any dollar value to the effort you expend renting out points.

When you add in that you are more likely to decide to use points you own "maybe just this once we will get a bigger unit" turns into "wow, we always want a biggest unit and we have the points" its isn't a given that it won't end up costing you a lot more.

Similar to us (except you need some OKW). Started with 200 OKW in 2006...then HHI...then BWV...and finally just bought 70 CCV this week. (650 total now and want 100 more CCV and then done as we'll have enough for about 4 weeks in a 1BR)

Is there such a thing? We have 1100 and are borrowed to the max. To be fair, we gave away 900 points this year to loved ones and it was so worth it. But we’ll be taking a break for a couple years and let all the new lands (crowds) settle down and then it will be like brand new again and maybe we’ll have to add on. lol!
