Buying DVC?

I am finally buying into DVC and have some questions.

Is it better to do it in person rather than from home?
Closing costs?
How many points do you wish you had or did you get too many?
How soon are points available?

Any other info you would have liked to know before you bought in, I would love to know.

It is no different if you buy from home or at Disney. the only difference is you can actual tour the models.
there are no closing costs right now, although I hear that will change soon.
I have 340 points and it is not too much for me, but you need to figure out what works for your vacatin needs.
Once you give a deposit, i believe you get a temporary member number and you should have your points right away to book a vacation.

We are in the process of buying through resale. So far, it has been painless. We are paying closing costs since this is resale instead of through WDW. We took the tour in Feb. We toured SSR. The tour process was nice as was our guide. They had a "deal" going at that time and I was told that I needed to act in 72 hours from the time I left property in order to get that deal. Boy, was that an internal struggle for me. I was still so full of questions and got home, hopped on the DIS and read here which created more questions and thoughts about what direction to go in.

We are buying 150 points (RESALE). We decided to try 150 (even though I wanted at least 200 ) to see how it went and that we might want to do more points at anouther resort instead of BCV. If we ever need to sell, 150 may be easier to sell than 250 .

I believe ressies can be made as soon as closing happens. We made an offer on resale and in less than a week we passed ROFR with WDW. It is moving quite fast IMHO.

I did the tour and it was great! We also checked out the other DVC resorts while visiting last year before buying and read the boards (quite frequently!). I ended up actually buying DVC from home though and that was pretty easy to do. I know it was more than a few days, because we decided to finish our vacation and my guide extended the time for that.

I bought 150 points to give it a try, but I've already added on through resale for another 50 points (after the tax check came). Even 200 points doesn't seem enough but DVC is so flexible for using points that it will work for now.

What I like best for our family is that I can take a studio trip for about 60-70 points for Sun-Thurs (or less depending on where/season) or I can bring the whole gang and get a 2 bdrm in late August for 170 points (Sun-Thurs nites).

I would say that the first thing to do is read the boards-I knew about as much as my guide when I took the tour!LOL Then figure out the amount of points that you need as a minimum. You can add on down the line and there have been various incentives to do so. Hope to see you at DVC!

we ended up getting 175 points and it was based on when we could vacation and the age of the kids. We bought when we were on the disney magic last year. They had the friends and family deal going so it was a very good buy for us.l

I bought 200 points over Easter and I went ahead and used them in May.

I have a total of 900 pts, and just gave 150 points to my oldest DD, to bring us down to 750. Eventually, the other DD will get a contract, too. I think we will use the remaining two contracts until we get too old to go to WDW, then we will give those to the kids, too. It's alot of points to have, but we use them all, since we take 4 vacations per year, and take all our extended family along, too.

250 points for us. Reason? One week in a 2-bedroom is roughly 250 points.

We are thinking of adding another contract of 150 points (resale this time if we do). We go down now for 12 nights so we are paying to stay off-site for the first 4 or 5 nights before we move to our DVC resort.

We didn't pay any closing costs.

I put the entire purchase on my Amex for the points!

We purchased in June, picked August for a use year, then used our first points in October (4 months after the purchase).

We did it from Montana although we talked to our rep in person on a preivous trip.

The entire thing was painless.

got a better deal than DVC could offer (but takes longer to close)...

we bought 100 pnts in BCV (Villa of preference for our family)... wanted more points to start, but figured we would "try first" and then buy more if needed.

We bought over the phone & sight unseen (SSR wasn't even open yet) and it worked out quite well. Our guide still gave us the full tour the next time we were at WDW, even though we'd already bought.

We took first trip to WDW last summer.
Came back did a few weeks of research(HERE) and then purchased at Disneyland.

Only difference I could see from doing it in person is that you would have to get papers notarized yourself.

After we got our paperwork we went back to see our guide @DL and their notary took care of everything for us, and they gave us ANOTHER set of fastpasses that the kids made quik use of.

Hi Lisa,

I did all of my research here on DIS and asked other DVC members. I did all of my stuff over the phone. My guide actually is in DL.

As for the number of points, I got the minimum of 150 and could probably use 50 more. Just take a look at the points calculators and figure out what type of room you need and when you will travel the most.

Last week mom and I were in a Studio at OKW. It was wonderful. Had our breakfast cereal there every morning

What is the current offer Disney has? Friends of ours want to buy in and I am trying to push them before Disney stops paying closing costs. Should they go through resale if they wait too long?
