Buying Direct

I don't know what people get over the phone, but we got a tote bag, a $50 gift card and for buying the day we toured (we had already planned to do so- not an impulse buy) we got 2015's points as a bonus. We also got water, snacks, fast passes, a ride to our ADR- that sort of little thing. And DD got to play at Lilo's while we toured, which she loved.

None of that (except the points) is enough to make the decision if there's value for you in buying over the phone, but there were some nice little touches, plus we preferred meeting our guide in person.

Experiences vary onsite though. Many reports of getting nothing. (And the 2015 points would definitely not have been a bonus for onsite. DVC always gives current points which I'd feel very certain is what they were for you, no matter how the guide must have spun it).

As a contrast. I've done a few direct purchases but only one onsite. My guide wouldn't even let me keep the pen I signed with.

We received the tote bag in the mail when we bought over the phone. It was a nice surprise. Since we purchased an August contract in May 2016, we also got the 2015 points.

We had initially met with the guide in person and accordingly recieved the minor onsite benefits (coffee, water, stickers, fast pass, van transport to the park, etc), but I didn't view them as worth more than the couple of hours of my vacation I spent with the guide.

I did not however get a gift card - that would have been nice!

Technically, they aren't bonus points. It's just a sales tactic. As long as you purchase in a month that comes before the month of your Use Year, they have to give you the points from the year before (because, you're still in that UY).

For example, you purchase in March, 2016, with a June UY. They have to give you 2015 points too. However, if you purchase in August 2016, with a June UY, you don't get those "bonus" points.

We just bought resale and have booked our first trip for next April/May at BWV. Already we're talking about adding on a small direct contract (25-50 points). Are all resorts around $160/pp currently?

Dvcnews has the current pricing. Dvcnews.com

Thanks, so if I bought another 25 points at BWV today, it would be $4K + closing costs.

Yes, that is what it appears to be, but would also be dependent on if they had points to sell you. DVC has resorts they are actively selling (Aulani and PVB) and then the older resorts that they reaquire points periodically thru ROFR or foreclosures so they may or may not have points to sell at them.

One thing I absolutely love about my guide is that when he was explaining the extra points, I said "Oh wow, so we're getting double for free" and he said "Well, no - you're actually owed those points anyway, but it's a nice perk to just get the extra ones, even though you're entitled to them anyway."

I agree. Mine told me the same thing. Probably why he's lasted as a DVC sales member for 25 years.

I wonder if we went through the same guy.

I did a 25 point add-on over the phone -- and we got the tote bag. It's actually kinda nice.

$4,106 to be exact, including closing costs. I just closed on BCV 25 point add on.

If you're going to use the AP discount, it's actually not a financially bad thing to do. I'm buying three APs in a few months -- and you end up saving $200 a piece on those. On a 25 point contract direct, closing costs are only $106 -- which means I'm paying about $164 a point. I'm going to save $600 based on the APs this year -- and with the discount from TIW, I will save even more money since we've got two family trips planned for next year. If we do APs again the following year, I'll need four -- so that is another $800 saved over not having the direct perks. That's at least $1400 savings in just two years -- which more than makes up for the additional cost of buying 25 points direct.

Let's say you need about 300 points in total. If you buy 100 direct now, then you'd have to wait for a resale 200 points contracts later.
But you you start resale, you may be a bit more flexible, because you may buy a 250 points contract resale and then add just 50 to get the total you want.
This is assumin you want the same resort for both contarcts, if you know you'll be buying two different resorts, then I'd say there isn't a big difference.

That's usually what I say about my "free" drink at the craps tables. "This is the best $200 Crown & Coke ever!"
:offtopic:That's so funny because when my husband goes down to the casino, he tells me he's "going out for coffee":drinking1...

We just got back from our trip, and toured at BWV to see the models. We recieved a $50 gift card, a cheapie reusable grocery type bag, and 3 fast passes for our family for touring. We are planning on buying, but we are saving for the cash. We were told that if we purchased within 10 days of the tour we would receive 2016 points as well as our regular use points. It's a shame we will miss out on that but we won't be financing, especially not at the rates they offered!!

Don't worry, you can always get those points as long as you choose a use year after the current month. So if you buy in April 2017 and choose a June UY, you will get both 2016 and 2017 points. If you buy in April 2017 but choose Feb UY, you just get 2017. The guide is not offering any special deal, just trying to pressure you into buying sooner.
