Butter or margarine?

It seems like I have seen lots of reports of there being only margarine available on DCL and NO BUTTER. Is this true? Can you get butter if you ask for it?

What is automatically put out is margarine. You can get real butter by asking for it. You want the gold wrapped stuff (at least as of June) to get the real thing!

yes, "real" butter is available.

also available is a butter/margarine combination that I ended up using a fair bit

I recall the butter/margarine combo being what was being served. I'm sure they have both individually.
Read an interesting article about the butter/margarine choice. Folks on the younger end of the baby boom grew up with margarine and prefer it because they think butter tastes funny. Folks on the older end of the baby boom tend to prefer butter.

As of July the only thing available the week we cruised was a whipped butter no more gold foil wrapped butter. I asked a couple times and was told each time that that was one of the cost cutting changes. We found it funny each night that on the table with 5 people and two full baskets of bread we were given 2 saucers each with 3 little packets of the whipped butter. Since our servers really weren't that good we usually went without refills. Unfortunately, it is one of the small but noticible cost cutting differences.

This is what I'm afraid of. I keep hearing conflicting reports! Anyone know what they were serving on an August cruise?

From a request I placed to a contact with DCL:
(Rec'd 08/21/09)

Thank you for your patience while I have researched your request.

I have good news for you concerning real butter on the ship. On the
tables in the dining room you will find a 'butter blend' (a mix of dairy
with margarine). However, if it is 100% butter you crave, your server
will be happy to provide this upon request.

Very interesting; never thought of it that way before. I have always been under the impression that it is more of a socioeconomic thing. Butter is obviously quite a bit more expensive than margarine, so margarine is kind of a "poor man's butter." People that grew up in a well-to-do family were likely to use butter, whereas lower and middle class people used margarine. And, because, tastes are often generational, it is passed down accordingly, regardless of how the financial situation progresses.

As far as taste, my family is a margarine/whipped spread (ala Country Crock) family. We use butter occasionally to bake with, but never on toast or baked potatoes or anything like that. It is not that I think butter has a "funny" taste. I just think it doesn't have much of a taste at all, compared to the creaminess of our beloved "tub butter."

Thanks I like to eat 'real' butter while I'm on vacation.:cool1:

BUTTER...BUTTER...BUTTER!:cheer2: Margarine never sets "foot" in this house. Accept no substitutes! << visualize a dancing butterstick. :rotfl:

I'm smack in the middle of the baby boomers, and I grew up eating margarine. If you think it's butter, but it's not - it's Chiffon.:rotfl2: My mom bought margarine in the little tubs. She also never threw out those little tubs! When I got married, my husband was used to eating butter (and Hellmann's instead of Miracle Whip), so then I bought butter. I buy it in 4 1-pound boxes at Sam's Club, and I keep all but 1 box in the freezer.

This is excellent news! I am a butter person all the way.

Does DCL let you bring your own butter on board? and will they keep it cold for you till your stateroom is ready? :lmao: :rotfl2::rotfl2::lmao:
