I don't think it has anything to do with there being plenty of food. If you wait in line (at the beginning of Cabanas) others will see you waiting in line and join the line thus making the whole thing worse. Not you personally but you in general. The stations are set up to spread people out and not meant for people to wait in one long line. Defeats the whole purpose of the food stations and the flow of people.

I had this conversation at work with someone over lines at Disney. People are sheep and play follow the leader. They see someone stand in line, they'll get inline. Ever drive thru the MK toll plaza when its busy? The majority of people will stay to the right and the left is usually very open. Same thing on the ships. One or 2 families get in line, however mistaken they are, (because they are conditioned) and every one else follows. Ive seen it I don't know how many times in different venues.

I think that on our next cruise I will stand by a door and wait to see how much time it takes for people to line up behind me. Then I will simply walk away.
