Buffet Etiquette? Line or no line??

There are no lines at the buffet on Magic, Fantasy, and Dream.

Everyone on DIS seems to know that.

Many people who cruise (almost all of them are NOT on DIS) do not know that.

Those who don't know, and dutifully get in line, are being courteous and trying to follow the rules, and are understandably stressed (we hope just a little bit) when they perceive someone jumping the line.

Unfortunately, some react VERY rudely to an action they think is rude. A little bit of sadness in life, but it does happen. Some folks think rudeness justifies a rude response.

Best to stop the rude interaction there. Don't rudely or loudly tell them that there are no lines, don't point to a sign without speaking, don't ignore them. A gentle response to a rude action might diffuse the situation immediately…"kill them with kindness." Nicely asking a nearby CM for support, not intervention, works. We've had a few glaring looks and angry comments, and a friendly response (starting with an apology, even though not required) has always worked.

The same lack of thought in the person standing in line where one does not exist that gives a dirty look or makes an inappropriate comment is the same in a person who rams their way in front of everybody already waiting at a busy elevator.

My one pleasant thought for the "oh so considerate" person (and sometimes it is entire families) that jump ahead of those waiting for a busy elevator is they often are the ones jammed into the rear of the elevator and off last. And if they choose to stand at the front to be first off (funny how that is often the case), a polite "there are others waiting to get on, please move to the back" usually will have them regret choosing to jump in front those waiting while I was standing there.

It seems to me when we were on the Wonder there was a line.

It's a different set up.

No line! Why, if I want cereal and you're queuing for eggs, must i wait behind you? Cabanas on Fantasy/Dream seems clear enough, Wonder was iffy but again, why wait when what i want is on the opposite end?

I go when it opens...there are 'no lines' then.

On my last cruise there was one person who didn't have to queue, he was served on by the servers Mr Holz whilst he was working on his PC.

There is not supposed to be a line, but if looks could kill.... :crazy2:

Yes/agree, but some people are all too quick to enforce what they think is the rules, and get it very wrong. Its a cruise, if everyone is respectful including those who think they know the rules we all will have a great time.

I have had people grab the spoon/tongs as soon as the other person is finished and turn to me and say "no lines"

Seriously? Wow!

Of course you would wait behind someone who is at the same food station as you.

Exactly.

You would not push someone out of the way if they were ahead of you at the Mickey Waffles but if someone is serving themselves waffles you certainly could move head to the corned beef hash/baked beans station.

Perfect explanation.

There's NOT one big long line for the whole place, but multiple, shorter, lines for each station.

So saying "no line" is a misunderstanding, otherwise it would be a free-for-all and we might as well just start eating FROM the food trays at the stations! But it's line up at the station where you want food.

I wonder, once again, how it is that people shove ahead onto an elevator but wait for scrambled eggs???!!!

bwa ha ha! True! (I give benefit of the doubt to people from countries like Korea, because that's just how it's done there, everyone shoves in or out, there's no waiting, and if you try to wait you will never get on an elevator, but not everyone is from there)

If people give me grief on my upcoming first cruise, I'm going to politely say "go ask a cast member how it works."

Great way to put it. :)

I've said it before and I'll say it again - it is a buffet, not a cafeteria.

I have no problem with people going ahead of me. I would go around someone if it's possible to do so without bumping into anyone if I don't like the selections in that area.

Cutting in front and then taking an extra long time causing a back load of people behind would be rude, IMHO. Going around grabbing what you need and moving on is fine with me!

I wish DCL would put up signs that explain "stations" wherever the lines start to form. I try to go to stations, but DH won't cut in front of anyone and so he takes forever to get through all of the stations. :sad2: I'm usually ready for seconds by the time he sits down.

Yes, when we went, some people were in line for the omelettes. I didn't want one, and moved on, I got some questioning looks, but then others joined the rebellion ;)
Its a buffet. Grab some food and move on then no lines.

Its no line except for BBB on the Wonder - and that I skip ahead when there's a gap and I know I don't want what's between me and the gap. Just ignore anyone who gives you a dirty look. Walk up to your station and when you can reach, get your food.

Oh the buffet lines!!! Such a source of debate. It's funny how the CM's say there is no line, yet they're not the ones getting the dirty looks and mean comments! I have tried both ways...sometimes depends on the mood of the crowd! But I do think if they're going to have "stations", they need to be separated somehow, otherwise people who don't come on the Dis and understand all think it's just one big buffet line and curses to those who want just one piece of bacon!

I experienced the exact same thing on the dream, multiple times I heard cm say there is no line, even heard them tell people that while they were currently waiting in line!!! Pretty much everyone insisted on waiting in line anyway and gave dirty looks when you went ahead. I guess people just really love waiting in line!

I had this conversation at work with someone over lines at Disney. People are sheep and play follow the leader. They see someone stand in line, they'll get inline. Ever drive thru the MK toll plaza when its busy? The majority of people will stay to the right and the left is usually very open. Same thing on the ships. One or 2 families get in line, however mistaken they are, (because they are conditioned) and every one else follows. Ive seen it I don't know how many times in different venues.

Wouldn't it be a funny thing to do if when the lady complained about the someone "jumping" ahead to get Mickey waffles or whatever, to turn around and say sorry I didn't know this waffle was yours and take the waffle off your plate and put it on hers! I think that would be funny, but I would never be that gutsy!

This is so true. How many times have we all been to a park prior to opening and everyone is lined up at one turnstile while the rest are empty? Better for those who think for themselves.
