Budget Buster: DirecTv is screwing us over!

My husband and I just moved to Philadelphia. We ordered DirecTV and Fios as part of a package, but when it was installed, we found out we couldn't get Fios, it's DSL, which isn't fast enough for me. We called and cancelled the DSL right away, since it never actually worked. We then called DirecTV to cancel and they said why don't you just try it for 30 days for free to see if we like it. We tried it for 20 days, we called to cancel today, and now they are telling us that by accepting the 30 day trial, we committed ourselves to a 1 year contract and will have to pay $500 as an early cancellation fee. They're going to charge it to our card soon, but we're fighting them on the phone right now. Is there anything we can do? They never said anything about a contract!

Check the paperwork you got when the system was installed. That's where the contract terms would be laid out. If you didn't sign anything, I don't know how they can hold you to a contract. BUT, I'm not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV.
