Brokeback Mountain

DH and i will go see it. He LOVES Heath Ledger (owns EVERY one of his movies, even the independent one). After seeing Donnie Darko, we're huge Jake I-can't-spell-his-last-name fans too. I read the short story the movie is based on in preparation. I thought it was super-boring, but the movie has Heath. :)

I loved Donnie Darko! Thought I was the only one out there that had even heard of it! I recommend renting it for anyone who likes Jake Gyllenhaal. And just to comment on the lack of theaters showing Brokeback, I read the producers are doing a slow release on purpose. A few select big cities, then more of the urban areas, and finally the suburbs and rurals (it will get there eventually).

I was really hoping that this thread woudln't deteriorate into homophobia, but sadly, I was wrong.

I am very much looking forward to seeing this film and watching two people who love each other, despite all of the social pressures to deny their true selves.

I agree with you. We saw the movie and did not think it lived up to the hype, but it was more on technical merit than the story or the acting. We just thought the editing was not done very well. The story is one we felt needed to be told to bring home the message of how much discrimination there really is and how difficult it is for gay people in rural areas to be themselves without fear of recrimination from people who are their neighbors.

Another big Donnie Darko fan. :wave2:

What they are doing with Brokeback is smart. Wait for the award nods to come around and get people to give it a shot despite their prejudices.

After watching The Soup and the Brokeback Kong / Memoirs of GeshiaKong skits, I am not sure I can watch either movie. The gay cowboys don't bother me, its remembering them as Kong that will.

Love the Soup!
Darn Gay Cowboy Gorrillas!

No you aren't alone, I loved Donnie Darko, great movie and it introduced me to Jake although he was a little off!

SSB saw the NA premier in Toronto, with the stars there. I know lots of good praise, but I personally didn't think Oscar worthy... but won't be surprised if it gets at least a nomination. Saw "Capote" the same time frame, and thought much better film, overall. Philip Seymour Hoffman is outstanding!

Capote was AMAZING. My boyfriend and I both loved that film. Sadly, I think it will be ignored. It's not getting the press push that Brokeback Mountain is getting. ( a weaker film in my opinion)

I loved it too and it is a better film. But it's not ignored: Hoffman is neck in neck with Ledger in sweeping the critics' prizes; and Catherine Keener's been cited too.

I'm shocked that Brokeback Mtn will actually be playing in San Antonio next week. I'm planning on seeing it with friends.

Just got home from seeing Brokeback Mountain! I had to go alone because my hubby REFUSED to see that movie. I liked it a lot, but I felt the ending was a big letdown. The ending should have been developed a lot more so that it evoked more emotion. I dont' want to give any specifics and ruin it for people who have not seen the movie yet.

And let me just say that I don't understand why Jake G. didn't get the Oscar nod over Heath L. I felt like he did the better job. Still, I'm rooting for Heath to win! They both did great in this movie.

By the way, it is only being shown in ONE theater in all of Las Vegas. :confused3

Im glad to hear this. I had been looking forward to see this movie, and when I checked this week, it is not playing in ANY of our local theatres. Now I have some hope that it is still coming, just taking awhile :flower:

Are you kidding? I don't see how the ending could be any LESS emotional. The scene between Ledger and his daughter is about as unsentimental and hence more realistic as you can imagine. Coming after the draining scene with Gyllenhaal's parents it made perfect sense.

But you're right: Gyllenhaal's touching performance has been underrated. Let's hope it gets an Oscar nomination too when nominations are announced in January.

I wasn't talking about the scene with the daughter. I was talking about him finding out about Jack, and about the visit to Jack's parent's house. He just didn't show much emotion. Maybe it needs to be more obvious for me, unless I missed something. :)

in philadelphia, there are two theaters showing it within one block of each other! probably cos all the people from the suburbs are treking in to see it, as their local theaters won't carry it

I had assumed it was b/c they were trying to get the movie out to meet deadlines for golden globe/oscar consideration. I've seen it year after year where movies come out in limited release--to get whatever it is they need for consideration...then they do a full release. Perfect timing to ride the awards buzz wave and get the best chance of snatching the award.

Can't think of any at the moment as I don't have a listing in front of me--but I did see some other movies do the very same thing this month.

i have been wanting to see it but havent been able to yet. they havent really made it readily available here. its open in a very small theater. i hate that.

"Brokeback Mountain"

Spoilers! Spoilers! Spoilers!

Remember there are Spoilers!
As I suspected. For those who can not get past men loving eachother and more precisedly, having sex, the rest of the movie will be pointless. This is a very deliberately paced movie which will also turn many people off. It was extremely nice to have the director take all the time he needed to introduce the two main characters and let their situation be visualized. Many of todays audiend would want this first 40 minutes condensed down into 5-7 minutes.
This is not anything like the crop of low budget, very independent "gay" movies that have come out in the last decade. This is a well crafted film and reminded me of "Days of Heaven"
Many people will wonder "where is the love?" forgetting that love is many things to many people and that the way, you love in your relationship is not the way it works for everyone. It took me a bit to reconcile this point but you have to keep your head routed in the time and place and, in particular with the characters. So the particular sex scene was kind of a shock to me though after thinking about it, it made sense. This is not an easy movie everything layed out. There are points that may or may not seem right to you that will come clear later or after you have stewed on it for a while. Or maybe they won't.
There are many who complain of the death in the movie. It has been the bane of gay stories, over the past many decades, that someone always has to die and that has been clearing up lately with lots of fresh, breezy, pleasent films ...which is wonderful. This is not that kind of film. The old convention of death shows up but it is the way this film works. I have read many reviews from people (mostly young gay men) who said that it was a bad story because the two men didn't have the courage to live together in love. That is not the story being told. Write your own script.
Yes this was a sad movie and I did cry though not so much (as I expected) at the very end as in other emotional scenes as well as one small spot at the beginning. The photography is beautiful as is the score. This is a realistic movie. You will find , maybe two lines in the film, to give you a chuckle, otherwise there are no one liners tossed in every few minutes to releive the tension or remind you that you are watching a film. There are no gratuitous, unbeleivable action sequences, there are no car chases or exreme violence, erotic sex scenes, nothing that is there to wink at the audience or remind you you are sitting in a theater.
Jake Gyllenhaal was very good. Not having seen him in much I did suspect he was a good actor, His character is the more fun pleasent one and, as such, seemed less of a challenge but he has some really, really good moments. I had heard Heath Leger's name over the years but have never seen him in anything and figure he was as portrayed by the media, a cute semi leading man passing through. He certainly busted up into the top level of actors on my list. I knew guys like this. Ebough said. Didn't know who Michelle Williams was either. Excellent acting in a small part.
You can never please everyone, Most of the reviews I have read are 10 stars (many people gushing on and on) or one star. It is fine to give it 10 stars if you felt that way. Most of the one star "reviews" were from people (mostly men) who, as said above and previously, can not get past the gay part of the movie and do not ever see the film. Most of the other half of the one star reviews seem to befrom gay men who wanted a fuzzy Hollywood romance about men coming out and starting a ranch and or moving to California or New York, which would be fine as a story but it isn't this story, or they wanted more sex, affection and such and that was all they wanted in the movie. There are very few mediocer or bad reviews that actually review the film honostly.
I don't know if it is the best film of the year, it is very good but I really like "Crash" too. I do think that Heath Leger's performance is one of the best in many years. Go see it and let it sink in. You may or may not like it but that is what films are about.

A forthright and sincere review. Funny thing, though: while A History of Violence and Capote are much better films, I can't get this one out of my head. A lot of people (straight, gay, male, female, young old) I've talked to over the holidays have confessed as much too, which may explain why it's doing so phenomenally well in limited release.
