Brokeback Mountain

I didn't grow up in a society where homosexuality was as widely accepted as it is now. As I've grown older (and thanks to some very good friends who are gay) I've learned to understand it better, and become much more accepting. But seeing two guys make out is still foreign to me, and I would still be a bit uncomfortable watching it. I'm not afraid of anything, and I'm sure there are people out there who would be uncomfortable watching a love scene between a heterosexual couple too. We all have our comfort levels, and for some this might be outside that. Doesn't make one homophobic. But you're right about one thing - if this were a cowgirl/cowgirl film, my dh would probably be all over it! :rotfl2:

Sometimes hetero sex scenes make me uncomfortable. But I don't avoid a movie because of one or two small scenes like that. You can cover your eyes and open your mind.

I'm the same way with violent scenes. But I don't avoid a movie because of it. Especially one that is highly rated.

this movie was amazing. i wasn't really interested in seeing it because i don't like love stories in general, but this film was beautiful and touching and funny and sad and i mulled it over for weeks after seeing it. it was definitely unforgettable.

Here in Houston they are only showing it in 1 theater! :earseek:
actually, it opened in a few more this last weekend, I saw it in the Edwards on I-10 after trying to see it at River Oaks (the line was around the block)

I loved it, thought it was a great story about how you don't choose who to fall in love with and to live your life the way you want to , not the way you think society wants you to.

for all of you who are wary of the love scenes- they're not that bad. yes there are a couple, but they're well done and very short, it's not like they're showing these two drop trou every 5 seconds. Heck, I've seen worse stuff on tv ( Queer as Folk anyone?)

Just because some people don't want to see a movie about a love story involving two male cowboys, or see a love scene between two men does not mean they are homophobic. I have no desire to see this either for the same reasons and others, but that doesn't make me homophobic. Is it my loss? What am I losing by not watching it? I'm not going to "lose" anything anymore than I didn't lose anything by not watching dozens of other films.

I think Iggipolka was referencing JoeEpcotRock's super predictable and super lame joke.

Queer as Folk has scarred me for life.....it is so hard to watch such good "male-flesh" go to the other team. ;) It pains me to watch the love scenes with "Brian"....knowing that I can't fantasize about him. :teeth:

I will watch this when it comes out on DVD but I won't be holding my breath for my hubby to accompany me to the theaters to see it.

I'm not avoiding it soley because of the love scenes. I may watch it when it comes out on DVD, but it's not a movie my dh and I would pay money to see during our once a month date night. We just have no desire to run out and see a movie about gay cowboys. Especially when my dh is a diehard John Wayne fan! But there are lots of other movies we aren't rushing out to see, not just this one.

Actually you can fantasize about Brian if you want. The actor who plays him is very straight, as is most of the cast. Justin and Emmett are gay in real life.

I, too, have no desire to see this movie. Gay cowboy movie just doesn't appeal to me, and no I'm not homophobic.

When I saw the trailer I actually thought it was a joke. Straight or gay, "Why can't I quit you?" has got to be the cheesiest line I've ever heard. I get a case of the church giggles every time I hear it on TV.

Squirming through homosexual love scenes doesn't make one a homophobe.

But posting bad jokes about dead actors and blowing kisses is a sure sign.

I'm going to see it tomorrow (I have the day off from work). Can't wait!

Although I do have to admit - the "I wish I knew how to quit you" line IS really cheesy. Did anyone see Nathan Lane making fun of that line - I think on one of the daytime talk shows? It was hilarious and everytime I see the movie commercial I think of it...

have to agree - I am looking forward to seeing the film, but Nathan Lane has totally ruined any chance of me taking that line seriously - he was hilarious in that interview!!!! Now it makes me giggle too! :wizard:

Actually, when you see the movie you realize the line works. They're cowboys. The line fits with the style of the rest of their dialog. :flower:

No, but saying something like this makes ya pretty darn close to one...
I will definitely skip this movie. I prefer cowboy movies where men shoot at each other -- not blow each other kisses (or worse).
Just say you aren't interested and leave it at that. :confused3

I'd like to see it, but will be waiting for DVD since DH is not interested. Of course he too would be interested if it was cowgirl/cowgirl.

Why is there such a double standard? I wouldn't be bothered by two girls, but you put two guys together and many men can't deal. Why?

No kidding. Perharps they are afraid to see it because they are afraid their own repressed feelings will come out? That's all I can think of. :confused3

again, just because folks dont want to see those scenes do not make one a homophobe. I am sick of being people being labeled just because they are not being PC.

Maybe - but I still think Nathan Lane may have corrupted that line for me...

No one SAID that, the homophobic thing came up because of THIS comment.

If it came from some other poster, I would have thought it a poor attempt at humor. Knowing the poster, I can't help but to think it was a homophobic comment.
