Brokeback Mountain

Free4Life -- The big "sins" being discussed here are adultery and homosexuality. Walk the Line shows Johnny Cash hooking up with a groupie with the implication IMO that there's one every night as well as in bed with June while he was married to his first wife. I belive June was also still married when they first got together.

 I have a confession to make - I havent SEEN THIS MOVIE YET!! I want to so badly.

It did come to our town, but I have asthma which is acting up real bad right now. Add that on top of my pregnant emotional self, and there is NO WAY I could make it through this movie without crying myself into an asthma attack :guilty: I cant even listen to some songs on the RADIO!!

So does anyone know when this movie comes out on dvd? I plan a night to myself after the baby is born to enjoy this movie and cry in the privacy of my own home.

I am really so excited to see it. I like and seek out anything that helps me to think of life from a perspective other than my own. I hope my mom will come watch it with me.

Sorry to bump up an old thread...but I just saw this movie last night. And, I'm...well...haunted by it. It was SUCH an amazing movie...I just can't get it out of my head right now. Yes, I cried at the end with the 2 shirts.

Was talking to my brother about it this morning...he's read the book...and I dunno if this was posted...but I found this interesting:

Turns out, in the book - the father in law was so pissed off that the
son-in-law barked at him on thanksgiving day (the whole t.v. incident..)
that he wanted to get revenge...

And the wife suspected something was up..

So the father in law set the husband up.

Remember after the dance thing - when the husband (of the wife who
talked A LOT) said "there's a cabin down south on the lake, we should go
fishing sometime. Nice lake"

Well, that was all a set up so the father could find out if he was truly
gay or not.

And the wife knew about it the whole time.

So, it was pretty disturbuing.

That would have been kinda 'key' to keep in the movie...but regardless...this movie enthralled me. The story between the two of them...just heart wrenchingly beautiful IMO.

So glad I got to see it.

It is amazing, but a couple of points of clarification:

The Thanksigiving scene at the Twist household is NOT in the short story; Lureen and Jack's son are barely mentioned at all, in fact. The film significantly expanded their roles.

You're right: it's obvious that Lureen is lying thru her yellowed teeth about what really happened to Jack; but there is no evidence to suggest that she (or her father L.B.) had him killed. All we do know is that Ennis, thanks to his wrenching childhood experience with homophobia, suspects his lover was killed.

again - my brother lied to me! grrrrrrrr

I had noticed this thread for weeks, but refrained from reading it until I had seen the movie. I just saw the movie and today and wow, it was moving beyond words. The scenery, the acting, the story....breathtaking. My only regret is that I saw the movie alone (while dh watched Firewall in the next theatre over!!). I would have liked to have gone for coffee with a friend after the movie to discuss.

Thanks Stinkerbelle for posting your thoughts on how Jack died. During that part of the movie, I was wondering if it had been his FIL who was involved. What a touching movie. I'll definitely watch it again and will be watching on Oscar night......

Here is a link to the short story. http://lamusclepower.tribe.net/thread/45024476-10bb-4e43-b09d-5e95dce67ef4 If you'd like more information on Jack's death without reading the short story highlight the following spoiler.

Quotes from the short story.

Down in Texas Jack’s father-in-law died and Lureen, who inherited the farm-equipment business, showed a skill for management and hard deals. Jack found himself with a vague managerial title, travelling to stock and agricultural-machinery shows. He had some money now and found ways to spend it on his buying trips. A little Texas accent flavored his sentences, “cow” twisted into “kyow” and “wife” coming out as “waf.” He’d had his front teeth filed down, set with steel plugs, and capped, said he’d felt no pain, wore Texas suits and a tall white hat.

The old man spoke angrily. “I can’t get no help out here. Jack used a say, ‘Ennis del Mar,’ he used a say, ‘I’m goin a bring him up here one a these days and we’ll lick this damn ranch into shape.’ He had some half-baked idea the two a you was goin a move up here, build a log cabin, and help me run this ranch and bring it up. Then this spring he’s got another one’s goin a come up here with him and build a place and help run the ranch, some ranch neighbor a his from down in Texas. He’s goin a split up with his wife and come back here. So he says. But like most a Jack’s ideas it never come to pass.”

So now he knew it had been the tire iron. He stood up, said you bet he’d like to see Jack’s room, recalled one of Jack’s stories about this old man.
