British Flag on Independence Day

Yes. I learned in history class that our country was formed by people fleeing persecution due to religious beliefs. If someone is being persecuted, doesn't that mean there was an oppressor? Weren't we fighting against England due to "taxation without representation?" Of course none of that applies now,

Perhaps a better example would be flying the Japanese flag on December 7th. Most are not offended by the Japanese flag, but would you display it in Pearl Harbor that day?

Yes, about 150yrs before the time we are talking about. The Americas, by the 1770's was not made up of ppl all fleeing from oppression  Two members of my own family came over .... my ggggg uncle to 'have his own land' in 1755 and then his sister, 3 years later to escape from an alcoholic, violent husband because divorce wasn't an option.

Oh GEEZ...........

Okay, I think this thread has run it's course.

Seriously, the Brits answered, and gave a detailed, informational response. No harm no foul. Thank you Brits! :) As far as balconies, I agree why the heck anyone would drape ANYTHING on them is beyond me. It's kind of eh hem trashy...Can't think of another word, lol. And keep in mind this was the Bay Lake Resort next the the CR.

No big deal, even a little funny, and that's coming from an American.

When I was in the Dominican last summer, I was quite baffled as to why someone would fly the old Soviet Union flag from their balcony, but just shrugged and walked on to the bar to get another drink. :confused3

Also, close to 20 years ago, I went to see Billy Joel and Elton John on tour together and my mom and I laughed when we saw the stage. On BJs side was a mural of the American side of the Revolutionary War and on EJs side was a mural of the British side. Hilarious!

I'd say it would have been poor taste of judgement to fly their (British) flag on "our" Independence Day. You could not be in Disney on the 4th of July and plead ignorance to our patriotism to our flag and country. Doesn't have anything to do with out relationship to them now, it just shouldn't be done out of respect. I sure would not do the same on their (or any country) national country holiday.

Yeah, well like I said earlier someone was hanging their laundry at the Grand Floridian balcony, Magic Kingdom view also! LOL! It definitely ruins the ambiance/view. Seriously, it ruins the "magic" and it does trash it, makes it look like a trailer park..............

I saw that a week ago and DH and I totally agreed.

What is disrespectful of someone of another nation flying their flag on their balcony on any day of the year? The act itself is not disrespectful... YOU make it what you want to see in it. It's a holiday celebrated in one small corner of the world based off of a historical event.

If you want to be offended, then there is nothing that can be done or said to make you feel otherwise. I, however, wish to see it as a group of people who are proud in their country and wanted to show where they are from... with no ill intent.

Whether a flag or towel I wouldn't necessarily see it as an offensive action. I'm English and have a George's cross towel, but wouldn't use it intentionally to cause offence. Personally, I have huge respect for America and independence day and wouldn't have hung anything on my balcony on July 4th (or any other day, but that's just me).

Of course, everybody is different. I would sincerely hope no Brit would choose to cause offence to the US or any other country they may be visiting, for that matter. I'm big on respect and manners, and hate that some tourists misbehave and can give their country a bad name.

Good God. Even if the person HAD done it as an insult...which, again, I don't think it was...it still wouldn't be like flying a swatika. There couldn't be anything funny about that. That's just horrid.

If I'd seen a nazi flag, I wouldn't have chuckled and wondered what the point was. I'd have ridden that monorail all the way around and personally voiced a complaint.

Not in the same ballpark.

That some people may be offended and that situation would clearly offend.

No problem. At the end of the day, if you're on holiday in a country, you must like it or you wouldn't be there. So respect it. Simple!!

Absolutely. Well said :) I liked it so much I moved here - no job transfer, didn't marry an american (already married to an awesome Brit) it was a personal choice. British by birth, American by choice :thumbsup2

I am hoping it was purely an oversight - I don't know the date on a regular day, let alone on vacation.

When my cousin came over she couldn't understand why it was so expensive so I told her it was because it fell over July 4th. Whats that? she asks.

See, everyone knows that America has an 'Independence Day' but they don't necessarily know the date. How many Americans know when St.Georges day is?
