British Flag on Independence Day

I am hoping it was purely an oversight - I don't know the date on a regular day, let alone on vacation.

When my cousin came over she couldn't understand why it was so expensive so I told her it was because it fell over July 4th. Whats that? she asks.

See, everyone knows that America has an 'Independence Day' but they don't necessarily know the date. How many Americans know when St.Georges day is?

Not me. I don't even know what St. George's Day is.

Ha! Sad I couldn't be there for the Jubliee though - hope you had a good time!

Amazingly I was in America! Family holiday to ny for my mums 60th. Was still buzzing when we got back on the Wednesday though, two days later. Looked like the country enjoyed it!

My point exactly. See *waves hand in front of face* this face is not bothered or offended that you did not know that.

So, lets say you were on holiday in England, hanging your flag off your balcony (it would have to be a very small flag heehee) and I went passed on a bus - ok, not quite monorail - and I saw that I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

St. George is the patron saint of England so we celebrate the fact we are English and that England is a country in its own right - its our day of Patriotism .... and an excuse for a party ;)

My Juniour school was "St. George's", so we celebrated it every year (on 23 April). Although I thought it was a Christian celebration, not about English nationality (it's been a long time since Juniour school though).

Question - I say you'd see no offence in someone hanging an American flag on St. George's Day, but the US has nothing to do with St. George's day (it isn't a celebration about being a country in its own right compares to the US), but would people in England feel offended if people flew a Scottish or Welsh flag on St. George's Day? Though, somehow the Welsh flag (in appearance) does seem appropriate.

Not me. If someone made a banner saying they hated st.georges day and was openly mocking it then yes, probably. But a flag from their country of birth? No.

I realise that, it was in response to a PP saying that it was disrespectful and that they wouldn't do it on another countries national holiday. I'm saying I wouldn't be offended if you did.

Ok, then lets spin this the other way. There are plenty of Americans in the UK who celebrate July 4th in the UK. Do we get offended by that? No, we buy a six pack and join them :thumbsup2

It'd bother me, perhaps more so cause I was briefly married to a mad Brit last year *2011 was rough for my kids and I - we're much happier now* he was/is such a pig, 7/4/11 was annoying, he was constantly going on and on about how much of the world Britain *sorry great is annoying* controlled :crazy2: He would totally do something like that on the 4th - to be annoying/crude.

Sorry to hear that... I promise though, we're not all pigs!!

Well, that was because he was a knob, not because he was British ;)

Glad you got out of that situation

Well, yes, a sign openly mocking the day could only be done to be offensive, so I get that! Thanks for your answer - I honestly wasn't sure since I know that national identity and pride can be a big issue between England, Scotland, and Wales.

I thought it was great that every so often Scottish Nationalists would try to make off with the Stone of Scone before its return!

I could see your point with it not being at Disney - just saying I know what it's like at Disney when we celebrate holidays here, and it's not hard to understand what is going on :confused3 no pleading ignorance to that one. This is one holiday that involves both nations, but we celebrate it - they don't. We just need to be respectful of a country's national holiday if we visit at that time. :goodvibes

Totally agree :) I think it was an oversight on their part, got there a few days before, maybe didn't realise the date til they had actually left their room.

OR

they were being disrespectful ... if thats the case, then 'off with their heads!' ;)

I just don't want this debate turning into a "Brits dont like that the US got their independence" because that really isn't the general consensus with us. We're glad you got it, we would have made a mess of the place and there wouldn't be any Disney :teeth:

Well you still have Canada. ;)Many of us are still very much British subjects at heart regardless of being 3rd generation Canadians. And we love our Head of State.

Hmm wonder if any Americans were wearing U.S. flags around Canada on Sunday...... :upsidedow

Would it be okay to fly a Canadian flag on the 4th since we won the War of 1812? :rotfl2:

And for the record first thing I thought of when I read the original post was EuroCup. Probably just British soccer fans.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!! OKaY!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew the question would be too difficult for some to answer intelligently and maturely. Thanks for proving me correct :)

Well then why are you so uptight over a British flag? Explain that.

It's obvious you didn't read my launch post. You're the one that's uptight and frankly quite rude. I find your post(s) ill mannered. Try reading my post it will do you some good.
