British Flag on Independence Day

I'm sorry. I was just asking because I didn't understand. I wasn't expecting him to "admit he was wrong in spades" or give a lecture on UK v. US. I don't think I ever said that.

If you go back and look at my post again, I did say that "we Americans" as a group -- which would, obviously, include myself -- have a tendancy to blow things out of proportion more than any other nationality. And I did specifically say I wasn't trying to call out your DH, but that he was someone we knew felt a certain way and perhaps he could provide a little perspective from the other side.

You and I have chatted and bantered before on a number of other topics (always friendly, I thought), and I figured that the fact that we kind of "know" each other would help me not be misunderstood. Apparently... I was wrong and didn't explain myself properly.

My apologies to you and your DH for any perceived insult or lack of humility.

:earsboy:

Hey there Searcher!

No apology needed. I mis interpreted your post and yes, I should know better as it is clear, our discussions have been colorful over the years! I will keep that in mind in the future and make the proper judgement on your words to me! In my defense however, sometimes words on a screen don't always express our true meanings and I read your post the wrong way.

Be well and stay cool! :flower3:

And for the record my friend, there are no flags on the balconies here at The Yacht Club, which I highly recommend! Just a woman with a Canadian Flag/Hat at Stormalong Bay!!

:lmao::beach:

Take care, Brunette.

I'm sure people around the world (small 'w') get sick of seeing the American flag & I sometimes wonder how Disney's Americana obsession plays to guests from around the world.

I love it :) Other countries tend to be patriotic and proud on only certain limited occasions, but Americans seem to wear your flag on your sleeve all the time. I (and many other Kiwis I know) admire how patriotic the US is every day of the year, it's a beautiful thing. Loving the fireworks at Disney this week too :thumbsup2

I am sure there was nothing meant by it. I am guessing it had to do with the London Olympics coming up and they are just proud that their country is hosting. Who cares? Other countries are allowed to be proud as well. England is a friend to the US so who cares? Don't be an American snob.

An American Snob!? WOW just WOW!

Don't think twice about it. Typical over the top comment from a Yankees fan. ;)

Well, I will have to be the lone dissenter here. I think it was inappropriate for them to display the Union Jack on our Independence Day. Would anyone display a banner of the Swastika on a Jewish holiday as a tongue in cheek joke?

There is nothing wrong with American patriotism and the fact is, we did fight a war against Britain. And 200 years is nothing, barely a blip in the history of the civilized world. Yes, we are all great allies now, but if an American did the same thing against another country, everyone would be tsk tsking.

Hey there Waltgirl!

LoL :thumbsup2

Why people have to NAME CALL is beyond me. I just wanted to get "other" opinions on this topic.

Thanks for posting. :)

You cannot compare the two, what a ridiculous comparison

Nobody would be tsk tsking if an American flew their flag from a vacation resort in the UK - we know how patriotic you guys are. We wouldn't give it a second thought. And us Brits all flew US flags after 9/11 from our windows so again, there would be tsk tsking on our part - we see you as cousins, unlike other countries.

Thanks for your opinion. You may not agree with my analogy, which admittedly is over the top, however, people are very sensitive when it comes to flags. For example, there are many online discussions regarding what the Confederate Flag represents. Many people are of the opinion it represents a pro slavery Confederacy. They believe it is insulting to continue to fly that flag.

Another poster was quick to point out how we wear our flag on our sleeves. I feel it is tasteless to display an oppressors flag when we are celebrating our independence. It seems like a dig...JMHO.

You don't think that's over the top?

Are you seriously comparing the British Union Jack to a National Socialist Party swastika banner??? :sad2: Don't answer that -- it's a rhetorical question.

Yes, your analogy was very over the top - you cannot compare what the Nazis did and it wasn't just the jewish.

In all honesty, the British family flying their flag may have put it out days before. We do not have a holiday that is on the same scale as July 4th so I'm betting it was purely an oversight and certainly not a dig. We have been in a LOT of wars, some really horrible ones and something we don't do is gloat over them.

A joke between neighbours is different, they know one another.

Let me correct your post, and ask a question.

"...people are very sensitive when it comes to flags..."
No, people are very sensitive when it comes to controversial flags, such as the Confederate flag or the Nazi Swastika flag. The British flag is not controversial and no one in the USA is sensitive about it.
"... I feel it is tasteless to display an oppressors flag when we are celebrating our independence... "
Are you saying that the British are oppressors of the USA? What are you saying?

I am as American as you can get. For the past two censuses, for "nationality", I have put down "Other" and written in "American". I am a mutt.

Would I care if someone flew a British flag on July 4th? Heck no! Because - THAT IS PART OF OUR HISTORY!

We did not become America until well after July 4th, 1776. The Declaration was an explanation of why we chose to break off from Britain. So on July 4, 1776, there were still British flags flying here in the US.

We never snapped our fingers and said "oh, we don't live under Britain's rule anymore starting today". It was a process and the Declaration was only the FIRST step. We just choose to celebrate the holiday on July 4th.

And BTW - British people do have a July 4th. And a 3rd and a 5th and they are allowed to fly their flag on any day they wish.

Until I read this thread, it never occurred to me that anyone would be offended by this.

Are you saying that the British are oppressors of the USA? What are you saying?

Yes. I learned in history class that our country was formed by people fleeing persecution due to religious beliefs. If someone is being persecuted, doesn't that mean there was an oppressor? Weren't we fighting against England due to "taxation without representation?" Of course none of that applies now,

Perhaps a better example would be flying the Japanese flag on December 7th. Most are not offended by the Japanese flag, but would you display it in Pearl Harbor that day?

The difference was that person was making a jab at the OP and I was just attempting to make a point. It was an extreme example but a purposeful one.

Good God. Even if the person HAD done it as an insult...which, again, I don't think it was...it still wouldn't be like flying a swatika. There couldn't be anything funny about that. That's just horrid.

If I'd seen a nazi flag, I wouldn't have chuckled and wondered what the point was. I'd have ridden that monorail all the way around and personally voiced a complaint.

Not in the same ballpark.
