Don't get me wrong - I like the Duggars. But the Bates family is definitely more genuine and "real".

I've been watching it, too. I agree,they seem much more "normal" than the Duggars (but I enjoy watching their show as well). I really like the theme song and a lot of the music they play on Bringing Up Bates.

This family lives in a neighboring town. I don't know them but my husband does. He has always told me what a polite, hardworking family they are..... He has always spoken very highly of them.

They are people I would want to meet...In one episode the mom, Kelly Jo, admitted they are less strict with the younger ones because they are tired! Loved her honesty!

Blanket training or not, I still like them better than the Duggars. They just seem more normal...as can be for a family of 19 kids. lol

He was cleared of the charges. There are many people on the board of directors, to include Gil Bates. Bill Clinton had sex with a young intern in the Oval Office. I suppose all those on his staff had sex with their interns, since he did, and he was their boss, according to your standards, yes? I could go on and on, but I won't. Clearly, we all see your predjudice.

In the early days the Duggars were not as savvy as they are now. They promoted blanket training in IBLP promotional materials and had info about Michael and Debbie Pearl's books on their website. There was even a watered down version of blanket training with a chair shown in a very early episode. When it came back to bite them they were able to scrub everything before it became widely known. I tend to think that the Bates probably learned from that and just never made that information widely known. ATI and IBLP don't seem like the type of organizations that allow their board members to stray too far from the program. When Kelly said she is less strict and mentions being tired, I took that to mean that the older kids are now responsible for discipline of the younger ones, not that they have it any easier. Until one of the kids breaks from the reservation and says exactly what goes on behind the scenes, I don't think we'll really know. But I do know it turns my stomach to see ATI conferences portrayed as just a non-denominational homeschool conference and Focus on the Family just produces wholesome podcasts for kids. Uh, no.
