On another thread, we were discussing those purses with the wooden handles and you could button on different covers, printed shoe strings with a belt to match, ESPRIT, wearing two or three Swatch watches, scratch and sniff stickers, and fruit scented markers. Oh, and I loved Farmer Ted!

Ok, Philly and Jersey folks....who remembers Captain Noah? We moved to PA when I was going into 6th grade, but I still watched! I learned the Rainbow Song on his show! (Red and yellow and pink and green. Purple and orange and blue....you can sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow, sing a rainbow too.)

Anyone else here grow up in NH (around the Manchester area) and remember the Uncle Gus Show (early 1970's....)? It was a local show, and he always had live audiences of kids, like Girl Scout troops and stuff. I remember going with my G.S. troop when I was a kid. I remember him asking where states were on a map, and if you got it wrong, he'd bonk you on the head with the map....

Wasn't it Robin Williams in Mork and Mindy that made those popular again. Yes I admit it, I had several pairs of suspenders, even rainbow ones. It would have made Steve Urkel proud!

I took all the chips from the Bionic Woman because she was trying to steal The Six Million Dollar Man from me. Adjusted to today's cost of living, would he be more like the Six Hundred Dollar Man?

I remember sledding down the embankment of the highway near our house. I also loved, loved, loved a show called the Bugaloos. I had their lunch box. I saw it once about a year or so ago on TVLand. I think my mom put something in the koolaid. That show was horrid.

Was it just my family, or did anyone else here make a big deal of watching the Jerry Lewis telethon every Labor Day weekend? We used to camp out in sleeping bags in front of the t.v., fall asleep in the wee hours, and then wake up and keep watching. When someone like Donny Osmond was on, we'd wait up all night just waiting....and then fall asleep (and of course, that was when he'd be on!)

I just thought of more!

-Prank calling people and getting away with it, because there was no caller ID or *69 back then. Of course, we only asked things like "Is your refrigerator running?", and innocent stuff like that!

-When you did something wrong in my neighborhood, and a neighbor caught you, you caught heck from that neighbor, they called your parents, and your parents backed them up and you got it double when you got home.


-When you never asked what was for dinner. There were no choices. Your mom made dinner, and you ate it. And that was that. (I can remember sitting for a good long time with a plate of cold tuna noodle casserole in front of me )

I remember those especially dinner. If by chance you did ask mom....her reply was "we're having shut up and eat it" needless to say we didnt ask alot

OMG! I was on Uncle Gus as a kid!!! I remember sitting up with him at the desk and talking to, (ok, lecturing!) him about baking with my mom and reminding him that you should never, ever stick your fingers in the bowl if you're using an electric mixer.

ETA- a while back I googled the show to see if there was anything about it. Sadly, nothing was taped or archived from what I could tell. Bummer.

I was one of Jerry's kids too! We also slept in sleeping bags in the living room to watch the Wizard of Oz when it came on. It was big movie, popcorn (we had the "old fashioned kind, oil and a pan - my mom would NEVER buy Jiffy Pop!) and sleep on the floor night. We looked forward to it all year!

You are right about reminising making you feel so old. When I try to explain some of these things to my kids (16 and 19) they look at me like I am straight out of the stone age!!!

Speaking of fashion... my kids recently found an old photo album at my parents. It was chocked full of pictures from the mid 70's - early 80's. As if the halter tops and short shorts that I had on weren't bad enough - my dad and brother look like twins in their short short jean cut-offs and knee high tube socks! In one, my brother is at the JUST opened EPCOT standing with one of those huge country "characters" in his skin tight EPCOT "baseball" shirt (you know - three quarter length sleeve t-shirts) and shorts with tube socks. We laughed for hours looking at those pictures!!!

I remember my Barbie whose arms and legs didn't bend. And her friends Midge and Ken.

I remember the original Captain Kangaroo show with Mr. Green Jeans, Bunny Rabbit, Mr. Moose and Dancing Bear.

I remember the old soaps--like Secret Storm and the Edge of Night. Not that I understood what the heck was going on.

I remember using an empty Pepsi bottle, filled with water and a cork with a metal top with little holes in it, to sprinkle water on the clothes before you ironed them. I guess steam irons hadn't been invented yet.

I remember the smell of freshly dried clothes as you took them off the clothesline and folded them into the basket. Everyone had clothes lines.

I remember going door to door, alone around our neighborhood, when I was maybe 7 or 8, selling candy for the Kiwanis Club that my dad was in.

I remember riding in my dad's Corvair car, he was driving and my step-sister and I were in the front seat with him. No seat belts either. He turned the corner and the passenger door flew open and my step-sister almost fell out of the car! Too funny!
