I was an 80's child and media had definately taken over by then, as you can see.

We always wore our seat belts!
Called my mom when I 'got there' and 'before leaving'.
Never trick or treated except at the mall in next town which sponsored an event.
I did freely ride my bike around the neighborhood of our very small town but could not cross main street lest I be hit by a truck and killed- instantly!
The grocery store was on my side of main street and a can of coke from the outside machine was 50 cents (and still is). In the summer I could usually score one of these a day by begging mom for quarters!
The library was on the opposite side of Main Street :sad1:

This thread really brought back a lot of memories--they were the good old days for sure.

I remember drawing houses in the street with chalk to play house.

Taking the bus to go rollerskating at a rink about 10 miles from home when I was in the 6th grade.

Playing all day "down at the brook".

8 tracks and 45's

Snow mobiling in the street with no helmets (no tickets for not wearing a helmet)

Playing hide and seek (aka man-hunt) with 20 kids hiding in the neighbors yards and nobody called the police (no criminal trespassing charges).

Listening for my mother's cow bell which meant dinner was ready.

Coming home only after the street lights turned on.

Arguing with my brothers when Cinderella came on T.V. for that once a year showing.

Wearing bread bags on my feet under my boots to help keep my feet dry.

Popping tar bubbles in the street on hot days.

Could go on..............

NKOTB.

I remember having a slumber party and dancing to someones video tape of a New Kids concert.

Nintendo. I got one and I just thought I was IT.

Hypercolor shirts. Celebrating sweat, in multi-colors.

Riding in the back of a pick up. On the interstate.

Jelly shoes. Nothing like playing kickball, and losing your shoe.

Playing Four Square.

You must be about the same age as me, as I remember EVERYTHING you are talking about.

Do you also remember those things that you put on the side of your shirt? That you would thread your shirt through?

Electric Youth perfume...LOL...didn't it have that pink squiggly thing in it?

Exclamation perfume, anyone remember that?

OMG- I can not believe I forgot to list jellies! I just saw some jellies in Target's dollar spot yesterday! And hypercolor- ha, ha! The drier never ruined mine though I am sure that was my mothers intention. :lmao:
I am 29, btw. I do remember exclaimation perfume and shirt clips/ties... remember banana hair clips, the 'new' mickey mouse club and bonkers candy?

So this thread got me thinking about what our kids will be saying about their "good 'ol days" 30 - 40 years from now. It made me sad because their world is so high tech. Instead of saying they played stickball outside until the street lights came on, they'll be saying things like:

-- Remember those huge Plasma TVs?
-- Remember how we used to lay around and listen to our IPods?
-- Remember how we used to play on our X-Box all day?
-- Remember text messaging on a cell phone?
-- Remember personal computers that took up a desk top?

Let's all make sure that our kids (or grandkids, nieces/nephews ect...) have real memories of exploration and creating things. My kids are outside in the backyard tonight sleeping in the new tent we just bought for our upcoming camping trip. Hopefully when they are older they'll have fond memories of our camping trips where they slept in a tent on the ground in the mountains and went to the bathroom in outhouses.

Hypercolor shirts. Celebrating sweat, in multi-colors.

One of my classmates worked for Generra doing hypercolor clothes. His dad went on to found Tommy Bahama with a few friends and they are rolling in the green stuff now.

I wish they'd bring them back - I was too old by that time to know about it until the fad was done.

pinstripe jeanes
facts of life
fantasy island
Blubber
Guess jeanes that were two toned acid wash. Mine were blue on one side and a grey on the other.:rotfl:
parachute pants

Here's some that will take you back-

Underoos

Granimals- I loved how I could match my own clothes.

I also wished stores could sell holiday stuff around the actual holiday not seeing Christmas stuff the day after Halloween.

Brut aftershave and Ambush perfume. I never could get into JadeEast. But I still get fuzzy feelings with the Brut:cloud9:

-Glittery Jelly sandals (man those caused blisters)

-Rugrats, Doug, Are You Afraid Of The Dark? (that show SCARED ME!)
-Goosebumps books (had a Goosebumps club in the 4th grade...all our books were in our lockers and you had to have a card to check them out, plus a quarter!)

-POGS

-the popcorn that when it was popped was several different colors...no clue what it was called, but it was awesome!

-there was this really awesome slide on the playground at one of the elementary schools in town, called the Dragon Slide...only 1st graders could go on it, not kindergarteners...but it was cool...then they took down all the awesome playground stuff and put up plastic stuff...ugh

-Oregon Trail

-cartoons on Saturday morning

-the ice cream truck...with the frostbitten popsicle things...yum!

-Creepy Crawler maker...along with the Dolly maker...the bugs were more fun to make than the dolls

so I'm not that old...but I still miss stuff from when I was little!

I remember when gas was less than a dollar!

Metal Merry-go-rounds and real swings at schools

those feather roach clips I put in my hair, I had no idea what they were really for!:scared1:

Bionic man, wonder woman, Bionic woman, The Hulk, PBS shows, national geographic specials.

Z Channel- my dad had a friend hook us up. It only lasted for a little while. :sad1:

Pop-up VHS players. Ex even had a Beta machine.

Cassette tapes

The first MTV broadcast and all the VJ's when all they played were music videos.

I was born in 1968 and sure wish I could go back in time sometimes.

the night I met my hysband he was wearing black parachute pants and white capezios---:scared1:
and I thought he looked fineeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember that look exactly with the parachute pants and white capezios, too! I had a crush on a guy who dressed like that. What's your DH's name? LOL Don't forget the big hair!

Does anyone remember the movie " Don't be afraid of the Dark"--

this movie really scared me as a kid---

I remember standing at the doorway of my bedtoom-- running and taking a flying leap onto my bed-- so that those little guys under my bed wouldn't grab my feet.:scared1:

I'm going to have to try and locate a copy -- to watch

Is this the same movie where at the end the little guys dragged a screaming woman down the steps and into the fireplace? Man oh man, my bedroom was at the top of the stairs and the fireplace was at the bottom and I was scared outta my wits by that movie! It still creeps me out!!!

Most of my memories are from the late 70's-80's. It makes me feel old when I think back and miss some things.

Saturday morning cartoons
Everyone watched the news at 6:00--not all day
The Early Show on CBS at 3:00
Playing outside all day and our parents not worrying about us
Everyone wasn't "plugged in" to different things all the time
Fantasy Island and Love Boat on Saturday night--No reality tv!
Barbies weren't considered to ruin girls self esteem
Fashion Plates--I loved fashion plates!
Blizzards were served upside down
Playing tag after dark--we were safe and the neighbors didn't complain we were being too loud

Rachel:earsboy: :earsgirl: :earsboy: :earsgirl:

kids birthday parties that were at the kid's house with a cake and ice cream and a tiny bag of take home party gifts. At the party, you played games and had fun with each other.

Ie......parties that didn't cost hundreds of dollars and parties where you didin't have to go out somewhere.

Just wanted to share with those of you who go back far enough about a magazine that I enjoy reading. It may not have my times in it, but it definitely has my parents times in it. It's called Reminisce magazine. The web site is http://www.reminisce.com/Default.asp?r_d=y . Nothing like reading back about days with no electricity and different correspondence during the wars. Most of the time it gets my brother's generation in there as well, but not quite mine. :goodvibes

:lmao:

The safety feature in my parents van was floor to ceiling shag carpet. We didn't even have back seats. Ahhh, I can remember sitting in the...not kidding...bean bag chair in the back, reading a book, or wrestling with my brother and getting carpet burn. And that lovely heated or mildewy shag carpet smell in the summers.

I also remember sitting in my granfather's lap steering his truck.

Going to the mall and six flags with my friends when I was 11...without parents.

How about the glory days of eating raw cookie dough? Oh the dangerous lives we led!!
I still eat raw cookie dough :rotfl: I am such the rebel
