Boxed Wine

I'm more of a red wine girl myself, but I've found black box wine to be very drinkable.
If I was looking for a white wine, I'd definitely give a black box version a try (does black box make white wines? I'm not even sure...)

In general when I look for wines, I'll go to Wegmans or Total Wine and look at their employees picks. There are a few employees that I've found I have the same taste as so I look for theirs.

A fairly inexpensive white that I like is Pierre Henri Chardonnay. I get it at Wegmans for about $8/bottle. Like I said, I'm more of a red wine girl, but for some reason I can drink this white. :)

Anyone who tells you that there are no good wines available in boxes is a wine snob.

I agree. My BIL works for a local vineyard that sells sort of high endish wine (he majored in viticulture and we all thought he was insane--but he got his dream job). He says that one of the biggest determiners of value and price on wine is the thickness of the bottle glass and the quality of the label printing. Sad, but true. There is a lot of crap in bottles, and there are decent (though not "fine") wines in boxes.

Agreed.

And this allows me to 'fess up to one of my life's embarrassing moments. I was in Rome sometime back in the 1990s, and in the hotel restaurant at breakfast, I fell into conversation with an American sitting at the next table. He mentioned that he was in the wine business. I had just read in Newsweek about what - to me, then - was a really weird idea, and I asked him if he had heard about this stupid idea of putting wine into a box.

He looked at me for a while, and said "Well, yes. I represent the company that is developing this technology, and I'm here talking to Italian winemakers about it."

Ouch. Me and my big mouth. After that, our discussion was distinctly awkward.

I buy Bota Box, Black Box and FishEye.All have been much better quality than the Franzia brand. Any of 3 liter boxes like the ones I have listed are generally better quality than the cheaper 5 liter boxes. I do agree that taste is highly subjective though. I was at a party the other evening wishing for a glass of my box Merlot. The higher priced bottles of Pinot Noir the host was pouring was just not appealing to me. I am starting to see (and buy) some really good Italian reds in a box ( most box wine is American or Australian).

After reading this thread, I got some Bota Box while I was out today. I have heard good things about it before. Thanks for the tip. I am having a glass of the Chardonnay right now and really liking it :)

You could probably find decent wine in a box but there is just something, I don't know, a little unsophisticated about boxed wine. It very well might not be warranted but "wine in a box" definitely portrays an image of swill.

I'm single and every now and then I want a glass of wine with dinner. A bottle would go bad before I finish it. So a nice box just waiting in the fidge is a great compromise.

I agree with the Black Box and Bota Box. But I'm not a wine expert.

On the 2nd glass of Bota it is getting even better :rotfl2: My big reason for wanting stuff from a box is not wanting to open a bottle. I am afraid it won't keep, although I never have let one sit for more than 2 days. I buy a lot of the single serving bottles, but that definitely gets expensive.

The first time I bought wine in a box (I bought black box) was because we were going to be attending a party at our neighborhood pool, where glass containers are not allowed.

Thanks for everyone's help. I went to our local liquor store yesterday and found one. It is Green Label Reisling by Deinhard, and I really like it. It is medium dry. It wasn't cheap - $40 for three litres, but I wasn't looking for cheap. I like the convenience of having it in the fridge. I'm a one glass drinker. Any more puts me to sleep.

I didn't realize there were so many different boxed wines and I'll be sure to try some of those suggested next time.

Thanks again and Happy Holidays!
