I don't know who designed my townhouse but the obviously didn't have a queen sized bed (or a large sofa). When I first moved in I only had a full-size bed. Now we have a queen bed. Problem is...it can't get up the first set of stairs. The ceiling on the landing is not high enough. (We couldn't get my sofa up last year either; its in the family room in the basement.)

Anyway, does anyone have any ideas on what to use instead of a box spring? Currently the mattress is on the floor and its way too soft. We thought about getting a platform bed but in the near future we are getting a whole new bedroom suit so that would be a waste. I also thought about getting 2 pieces of plywood and putting them on the frame to use for now.

Any suggestions? :)

I know they make split box springs. Is this a option for you. I used to have one for my queen bed.

Are you able to buy a king bed? A friend of mine had to do that when is queen box spring wouldn't fit upstairs (old home). He sold his queen and bought a king with the split box spring (the size of two separate x-long twins). Expensive but he also got tired of sleeping on the floor.

I think I've seen split for queens but they are more rare. We couldn't find one for my friend back then with out paying loads to get it shipped unfortantely (years ago)

I had an ex-boyfriend who was handy build me a simple platform out of heavy plywood and some decking posts when I ran into a similar problem years ago.

Since he made it, he would take it apart when needed and move the pieces in and out. (Not a great option if you move a lot, I guess!)

It lasted longer than the mattress and one of my nephews has it in his room now!

Come to think of it, the platform has been around much longer then the old boyfriend! :rotfl2:

Yep, split box springs. We had the same issue and couldn't get ours up to our room. The first furniture store I called had split box springs for a queen size bed.
