Bought at Poly and stayed at Saratoga!?!

If you buy directly from Disney, your Vacation Guide can assist in booking your very first rez. This can be super helpful in securing your home resort, though it is not alway possible. DVC will often pull some extra strings to help secure that first rez as they are generally short notice bookings.

I bought at OKW in the early 90's. I've added on several times, including Vero Beach. I've stayed all over the place, including at the new Poly Villas Studios. I ALWAYS look to see what it would cost me to book the room on cash. I have my own formula based on my actual cost per point, factoring in my annual dues, etc., to see if I'm still getting a good deal. And honey, believe me, I AM. :cutie:

One quick question, is it possible that they got double points based on use year and turned around and used some of those?

The "double points" is a misnomer. DVC gives you the points you are supposed to get in the UY you are in. So right now, anyone who buys Poly with a July or later UY would get 2014 and 2015 points when they close because they are currently in their 2014 UY.

There had been a few promotions in the past where a SSR-only bonus stay was a sales incentive. But I don't think that has happened since SSR "sold out" because there is no big block of developer's inventory at SSR

When we were at the World last week my husband met a couple that just recently purchased at Poly. The first thing they did was schedule a trip and, since only SS was available, stayed there.

I still just can't wrap my head around spending 165/point to stay at SS. I know it's their money and people can do as they please but it's seems like such a waste.

Do you think a majority of Poly purchases are from people who just want to buy DVC and Poly was the one available when they decided to buy? I know this isn't the first time I have heard someone doing this so it makes me think people aren't buying b/c they love Poly- they are buying b/c that is what the salesmen are pushing.

I am having trouble wrapping my head around the fact that you felt the need to "judge" how other's used their points. Seriously, who cares? They are their points and they can use them as they see fit.

To each their own. I am not trying to judge. Like I said- I can't understand paying 165/point and turning around a renting a room that you could have bought points for 65/point. They were in a studio so I know they weren't going for a 1 or 2 bedroom. I think they were excited to use their points right away and saratoga was all that was available.

Really my main question I was trying to ask was if people think the majority of people buying Poly are really wanting to stay there or they were just ready to buy and that is what Disney DVC was selling.

We bought at BLT in late 2009 and our 1st DVC stay was at BWV with a boardwalk view, a complete luck of the draw. It was magical. It totally set the tone for our entire membership. We have been able to use our BLT points to stay at every WDW DVC resort except VWL and VGF so far, we are staying at PVB in September.

As for SSR, I am thrilled to stay there every time we do, don't care where the points come from.

Disney's marketing for Poly was different than past resorts. They specifically went after hard-core Poly lovers who wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else. So there's probably a healthy number of owners who are planning to only use their points at the Poly. But there will ALWAYS be people who buy at a resort simply because that's where Disney tells them that's where they can buy. Those were impulse purchases, and those owners likely won't be worried about "getting the most" for their point costs.

Knowing how you use your points now do you wish you had more points by buying resale for say- Saratoga? I guess that is my big question. It seems like a lot of people are saying they use their points for all the resorts. If that is the case why not buy the cheapest resorts with one of the lowest dues? Why pay 85-165/point when you could pay 65-80/point?

Fair question.

When we bought it was an impulse buy, completely out of the blue, never looked into it before that day. They were selling BLT, AKV and SSR Treehouses. We bought BLT because the MFs were the lowest. Period.

That is what I have to keep in mind. I think I can be a bit overzealous when trying to get the most bang for my buck. I think a lot of people are just happy not having to do the research and going straight to Disney and buying. They are not worried about "getting the most"- they are just happy for the ease of purchase and immediate use.

Heck yes. Had we known just how much we enjoy SSR we would have just bought there and been done with it. Didn't know about the resale market until well after we had bought direct. We have since bought BCV resale because we need the 11 booking advantage, as we do with BLT. I would LOVE some SSR resale points to add to the mix...maybe someday. :)

I understand the concept and being as it's the end of the school year, I'm more focused on the finals I'm administering than proper DVC jargon right now. Also, no July UY.

That said, if someone bought in and obtained 2014's points but had a use'm or lose'm, without wanting/thinking of banking, a stay at SSR is a decent use of said points.

Also, the 2014 points aren't really free, in the sense that Disney is charging you member fees for the partial year that you own this year when you purchase. So yes you aren't paying the full 2014 member fees, but depending on when you purchase you may be paying a half year or so.

In 2003 we purchased VWL resale. We had 135 points left in holding and our first trip was a last minute Hilton Head trip for a long weekend in September. We didn't stay at VWL until Sept. 2004.

Then why would you spend 25 points per night for a Poly studio when you could get a Saratoga Springs studio for 14 points during the same season?

Your "bang" is different from someone else's "bang." And trips shouldn't immediately be deemed a failure if spent away from one's Home resort or even #1 booking option. 50 years of ownership is an awful long time to sweat over such minutiae.

Never said it was a failure. I think for me it's just the initial spending of $165 per point and turning around and using it at the cheapest resort. Just came here to ask an opinion on why someone would spend so much for poly points only to turn around and use it at saratoga which only cost 65-80/point. I really think they were just excited to use their points and wanted to come back right away and saratoga was available- question answered.

I would think getting the literal "biggest bang" would be buying the cheapest points with one of the lowest dues and staying at the resort that is the least amount of points.

lol. Since the person isn't here to explain, there was never going to be a definitive answer.

I could think of about a dozen other reasons without breaking a sweat. But if you've found one which fits your own personal bias, that's probably about as far as the discussion will go.

This direction can quickly make DVC cost them more than just paying cash. There will be several types of buyers retail and/or at high demand resorts but the main ones will be those who are informed and are buying mainly to use at the high demand resort, those that are set on buying retail no matter what as they will buy what's being sold and those who simply don't know any better. Hopefully this was a temporary issue and they will plan to better use or rent their high demand points in the future.

Just got back in May from our WDW trip. Offered a $100 giftcard to tour DVC while staying in Jambo House. I was curious and for 60 mins to get a $!00 gift card, I was game! Fast passes sweetened the Deal. Took the tour and loved what we saw. We go to Disney once to twice a year. Only thing Disney was selling was Aulani and Poly. Thought it was worth researching after tour so we didn't purchase there. Got home and decided that we would be small (75 points) to get in. My wife loves the Poly atmosphere and wanted to be on the monorail. I knew of resale but wanted the quick in to book for January so we could get the home resort advantage. Our next purchase will be resale and a different resort to get more points. The price was high but we didn't get many points. We can stay 5 or 6 nights and are good with that in the season we usually go in.
