We have a March UY. If I cancel the October trip but book another one for before the end of February '06 can I ask MS to use the borrowed points first so they don't expire? If I cancel the October trip any 2005 points go back into that UY, right? Then I could bank them into 2006, right? As long as I bank them before the end of August so I can bank all 100%. Do I have this correct? Also, I had banked 100 '04 points into 2005. Those points would have been used first for two earlier trips, in May and June, I have planned, right? So those points would be gone before the October trip and won't be lost. (I hope)
Once points are borrowed or banked for a reservation, they can't be moved again if the reservation is cancelled. They are "stuck" in that Use Year. You could bank the current year points if you are within the deadlines.
You should make sure MS uses your banked/borrowed points first when making a new reservation. If you have an existing reservation, they can cancel and re-book using the b/b points (depending upon whether or not a waitlist exists).

No way to know for sure what points were used for those trips. You'll have to call MS and ask for a status of your points to know. That's why it's a good idea to verify point status at the end of every call to MS. If something doesn't sound right, it's a Lot easier to fix it then. My advice is to call and be sure.
