I have no problem with a legal work exchange--but they should get minimum wage just like everyone else.

When my parents were young, there were Americans doing these jobs. There would have to be changes made surely. But after the scare of ecoli in spinach...I would love to see agriculture taken to task for their growing/harvesting methods. We are capable of supplying our tables without demanding the poor from other countries do our dirty work.

Teaching students in their native tongue when they come to a new country does more harm than good if schools basically conduct all business in spanish for them.

It's funny but after i posted that, i realized all the cambodian immigrants i went to school with...they managed to learn english effortlessly! They received better grades than I did I'm shamed to admit!

No, I am referencing Free Enterpise. If some guy decides the job is good enough for him, who are you to say it isn't? Not you personally, just anyone. If two people make a deal, it isn't anyone else's business to put a stop to it.

I pay the lawn guys less, so I have more. Now I can buy new furniture, which employs the guys who build it, ship it, and deliver it. They now have money they otherwise wouldn't have had, and can go out to eat, supporting waitresses, who can go to a movie, supporting ticket-sellers, etc.

And they guys who mow the lawn have money they wouldn't have if it weren't possible to hire them. They are happier here than they would be in Mexico, so nobody should butt in and say it isn't fair. Then they just go back to worse.

I may be the biggest fan of choice, freedom and capitalism on the DIS, and I'll never, ever be swayed.

Actually young children are very adept at picking up a foreign language--the younger they are the easier it is. The older you get, the more difficult it is to learn.

This is generally true..I have 2 portuguese friends who learned nearly perfect English in less than a year..They were in schools that were 99% English speaking...It was total immersion and they learned fast..They also went home to neighborhoods where everyone around them spoke English,except their family...This was not the case in many San Diego Schools..My kids went to a school where about half of the kids spoke spanish.. The English speaking kidsstuck with English speakers..The Spanish speaking kids stuck with Spanish speaking kids...The Spanish speaking kids went home to mainly Spanish speaking neighborhoods..Like I said,The SPanish speaking kids did speak English eventually,but it took years.

But you know what, we do need busboys and lawn-mowers...not that that is all Mexicans are capable of doing! Those are the jobs they take, though. So, why not? They have families to support, too. ?

I don't know abut everyplace but around here my landscaper is stopped a few times a week to make sure his crew has all their "papers" in order. Of course they could be fakes but they do stop the landscaping trucks here to make sure they are not picking up day laborers and illegals. Our landscaping crew is acutally 6 white guys and one spanish guy.

Good job people...hardly any inflamatory comments...I'm sorry I had to leave last night...good arguments from both sides and very interesting observations from people that live along the Mexican border...I'm still for the wall and anything else that will prevent illegal immigrants from coming into the US ...my grandfather and thousands more like him immigrated to the US for a better life...they learned the ways of the US and conformed to fit in...we didn't change our language or add other languages as a second language so everyone would feel comfortable here...the early legal immigrants came here and eventually fit in and earned their way and making this country a better place live today...giving illegals jobs, welfare, education, ect. is plain wrong...and any illegal coming here pregnant should be sent back with their baby.

I think that too; it's time to repeal that law. Back in the day the United States needed immigrants because we had no people, now we don't need them unless they are productive members of society..how easy is it to get into Canda??? Is there any other country in the world that you can go to pregnant and have that child be a citizen of that country or is it only us? I feel for these people wanting to have a better life but can we handle all of them??? I don't know the answer.

I voted yes for a border wall, but I believe this would only be a temp solution. What makes people think that if imigrants really wanted in that they would just do the "end around" thru Canada? Sure in the short term it may stop the stampeed that happens after dark all accross Texas and New Mexico among others. From what I understand about this is the the proposal on the wall is only for about half of the border and I question how effective that would really be. It may on the other hand make all the illegals cross at a certain point which may be easier to patrol. As long as American's continue to employ the people that are crossing the border this problem will never be solved. If there is no possible reward for the people comming in illegally then that would be the strongest deterant, other than the use of deadly force. But I digress, because the use of deadly force is unacceptable. At least in my mind.

I don't think the wall is a perfect plan, but we've GOT to start somewhere. Go after the employers as well, if there are no jobs, they won't come. We're all paying for the costs of illegal immigration in our taxes and our health care bills.

I had surgery in January and luckily for me, I have a good job with good medical insurance. The woman I spoke to in the billing dept at the hospital told me that they bill insured customers at the highest possible rate so that they can get as much money out of the insurance companies as possible. That will defray the cost of providing health care for the illegals that come through the ER. They cannot turn them away becuase they don't have insurance. Two co-workers told me similar stories, one just had a baby and another had orthopedic surgery. THE HOSPITALS ARE ADMITTING THIS PRACTICE!!! THEY ARE OVERCHARGING INSURED PATIENTS TO COVER THE UNINSURED ILLEGALS!!!

I'm fed up to the gills with the whole thing. Come here legally, learn the language and pay your taxes. Don't march around waving your Mexican flag asking me to pay for your kid to go to school, for your medical bills when you go to the ER and now you want Social Security????
