We're visiting San Francisco and Los Angeles next April, including a visit to Disneyland, flying from London to SFO and back to London from LAX. I'm not sure whether to take a couple of days to drive from San Francisco to LA sightseeing along the way, or whether to fly and mximise my time in botgh cities. What should I expect to pay for SFO-LAX flights? My local travel agents in London are quoting $200+ for what seems like a very short flight. Is this a typical price, or is booking from the UK more expensive?

Regards

Rob

I don't know if booking from UK is more expensive but try www.expedia.com they seem to have good prices and unlike the website where you bid on your travel you know exactly what you get for your money with expedia. Also try www.southwest.com I love this airline and they have alot of cheap flying within California. Driving is noce but a trip all in its own if you stop alot to sightsee. Might be tired by the time you get to LA. Happy planning!!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I have driven from San Jose[which is just south of San Francisco]It is an 9 hour drive and it is thru the most boring farmland,no people in site,no houses in site, just dirtand more dirt with no exits for food or bathroom breaks till you get very close to LA.

There are Commuter flights in Calif.
Alaska Airlines
1 Adult- $105.00 R Jan 06 244 San Francisco 8:17 am Los Angeles 9:44 am 0 737 Coach

Southwest Airlines
----Trip Date Day Stops Flight Routing
Depart Jan 6 Mon N/S 2144 Depart Oakland (OAK) at 9:00 AM
Arrive in Orange County (SNA) at 10:20 AM
Depart Refundable Fare $ 88.37 $ 9.63 $ 5.50 1 $ 103.50

You can also try travelocity.com or orbitz.com is also good -

Just a question, are you going to LAX for a reason? The only reason I ask is you can also fly Jet Blue into Long Beach. Long Beach is a small airport and so much better to deal with than LAX - You may want to check that option as well.

tink2dw mentions that the drive was all dirt & farmland. That's true if you're driving down interstate 5. If you'd like to see some spectacular views of the coast, you might want to drive down Highway 1. You can stop overnight at one of the costal towns like Santa Barbara , Pismo Beach or, one of my favorites, Cambria. Driving down Hwy 1 will add a great deal of driving time which is why I'd suggest stopping overnight somewhere. You can reduce some of that time by driving down hwy 101 for part of your trip. Actually, I think Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach are closer to the 101.

If you chose to fly, there are much cheaper alternatives as previously mentioned. There are several airports that service the greater Los Angeles area. Burbank, Long Beach and Orange County's John Wayne are the other airports in the area. LAX will give you the greatest number of flight choices though. Check Southwest, America West, Jet Blue(Long Beach only) and Alaska Airlines. You could also do a search on www.sidestep.com. That website will check several travel websites to find the lowest fares, including Southwest which is not on Expedia or Travelocity.

Thanks for the advice. I've now booked Oakland to Orange County with Alaska Airlines. Tickets cost approximately $86 each for a one way journey next April, booked via British Airways in the UK who were cheaper than booking direct with Alaska or via Travelocity!
