If I put down a deposit now for October next year (2014), can I get a discount applied later? Is there a time period for codes that come out for next year?

If there are rooms available at the discount for the resort, room type and dates that you need, then yes. But having a room booked does not guarantee that any discounts that come out will apply.

General Public discounted rates for October have typically come out in late July/August time frame.

It depends...

Is there a specific resort that you're willing to stay at, even if you have to pay the non-discounted rate? If so, I would book now, make the deposit, and then when discounts come out, see if you can apply the discount or possibly upgrade to a different resort.

Are you depending on the discount to stay on-site? If so, then I would book something off-site, wait for discounts to come out, see if you can get the resort you want, or one that you would be happy with.

Either way, you will need to understand that even if discounts come out, you may not be able to get one.

We generally book ahead of time and then change to the best discount. Just make sure you keep up with the release dates. I find, that it keeps me on track financially if I already have my room booked. I pay Disney as if it were another bill out of each of my and my DH's check. Not only does it keep me excited for months ahead of time, but it makes me think twice before blowing my paycheck at the mall.

I always make my initial booking a room only reservation to avoid having to pay a big deposit.

When discounts are announced later, I have never had any issue getting Disney to apply those discounts to my reservation.
