Booking Member Cruise on First Day?

In directions, it says to have 3 acceptable categories.....what about mentioning areas of ship, or particular room numbers? Last year, I booked months after the initial booking date, so not much choice, but did have some requests and we got them.

I have 3 categories picked, but in each there are preferred cabins, and some unacceptable ones. How does it work?
