Booking a split stay with discounts

Let's say I want to do a split stay (4 nights at each resort) with a dining plan on both ends.

For the first resort, it's unclear (until discounts are announced) whether free dining or a room (e.g., AP) discount will be the better deal.

For the second resort, assume a room (e.g., AP) disount will be the better deal.

I don't yet have an annual pass (I intended to upgrade one MYW ticket to an AP while at WDW).

If free dining is the better deal for the first resort, I assume I can do the following:

(1) Book room + enough MYW tickets to last for the entire stay at both resorts (e.g., 9 days) + free dining at the first resort

(2) Book a ticketless AP room + paid dining package at the second resort

(3) At any time prior to checking in at the second resort, upgrade one MYW ticket to an AP (at guest relations at a park)

(4) During check in at the second resort, have remaining days on the MYW tickets transfered to the new KTTW cards

But what if an AP room discount is a better deal than free dining at the first resort? Can I basically use the same strategy? What do I do if I show up at the first resort and the CM asks to see my AP and refuses to check me in until I provide it?

(I know this has been asked and answered before on these boards but I want to make sure I'm "in the know" with the most recent information when I'm on the phone with the CM as well as when I show up at WDW).

(4) - You can try. However, it has been advised to keep tickets on your original KTTW card, and do not transfer. Past attempts to transfer to a new KTTW card have been known to mess things up, esp the dining credits.

(5) - You must have proof of AP prior to checkin, otherwise, you will pay rack-rate.

I'm confused as to why you'd purchase more ticket days than what is required for a free dining package if you intend to upgrade to an AP. if the FD package requires a 2 day ticket just buy that then upgrade.

You mention taking one of the MYW tickets to upgrade it- you do not get separate one day tickets. You would get a single 2 day or 9 day ticket. So whatever the amount to purchase that number of days is the amount that will be applied toward purchasing your AP.

also, I'm pretty certain you are able to check into a resort on an AP rate then head to a park to get the AP but, are required to return with the AP. failure to do so will result in being charged rack rate for the length of stay.
