A water main broke and my school lost water this morning--they sent us all home at noon, hurray! But by then the bathrooms were already getting gross and , get this, they still served lunch even though the lunch ladies couldn't wash their hands. YUK!

EEWWWW.

I bet that was one of those things where they said by whatever lw it is we have to give the children the opportunity to eat.....even if it looks and smells like a bathroom near by!!!!

Double ewww

Know why they served lunch, so it can count as a school day.

Exactly right, since they served lunch and we were there until 12 it counts as a full day!
We do have lots of bathrooms, but we also have 1300 kids and 130 teachers/ staff members! And as soon as they announced at 9:30 "please stop calling the office, we know there is no water pressure" suddenly everyone was thirsty or had to go to the bathroom. My students are all at least 15 so it's not like they don't understand about sanitary conditions.
I thought for a while they would make us tough it out, but as a parent I would be disgusted if they kept my kids all day at a school without water, so I'm glad they let us go. Plus my two worst classes are in the afternoon!:bounce:
The biggest YUK was at the end of the day the custodians were pushing a cart full of culligan water containers--two other teachers and I asked if that was for tomorrow if we still don't have water--they said no, it was so they could flush the toilets! EEEWWWWWWW! They said we could help them if we wanted to ;) but we all hightailed it out of there!

I had the same experience working at a daycare. The construction workers broke the water main and we were all out of water. What was worse was the owner made us stay open, he contacted Health Services and they said as long as we can walk to somewhere that could supply us with buckets of water we didn't have to shutdown.

I was so mad that I called all of the parents in the center and warned them what was happening because that was just disgusting. We had kids ages 6 weeks to 12 year olds. No water to make bottles, wash hands, clean up..nothing. Amazingly a lot of the parents knowingly left their kids there under those circumstances. If I was a parent there, I would have immediately picked up my child. Yuck.
