Bonine vs. Dramamine -- and side effects

I'm very prone to motion-sickness and the bonine works great for me (as long as I remember to take it:headache:).

For me I've found that starting it the morning of the cruise works fine and if there is alot of motion later on the ship I'll take another one (about 12 hours after that morning's dose). I've even had a drink (sailaway drink) while on it and was not even drowsy:confused3 Not recommending drinking while on it, just that for me one drink doesn't make me drowsy with bonine. Pretty sure there wasn't much alcohol in my version anyway:rolleyes1

I've also tried ginger capsules after the StarTours at MGM and they worked greated:thumbsup2 However I have heard that ginger capsules will interact with some medicines -so check with your MD before using them.

I would recommend trying your chosen remedy at home to see how you react to it:goodvibes

Never been seasick on the Wonder or Magic-it seems to be the smaller boats that do me in...and planes, and cars, and rides:rolleyes1

So, this may be a silly question, please bear with me... I haven't gotten sea sick on the Magic, but each time we get off it takes a couple of days to loose the sea legs. I have heard people say that if you take bonine or dramamine this doesn't happen. Anyone have any experience with this? We are on the WBTA this September and I would hate to feel like everythign is rocking a week after we get home...

I get very seasick and Bonine works the best for me. I take it before I get on the ship and once a day on the ship. I take it for one day after the cruise and that prevents me from feeling sick on shore.

I, too, felt "goofy" after getting home from our 7 day cruise last summer. It lasted at lease a week. I didn't remember feeling like that after our 4 day. Do you think it'll last 14 days after my TA this year? :lmao: Maybe I'll try taking my meclezine every day instead of stopping whenever I feel like I don't need it anymore and see if it helps.

Wow if Bonine makes you drowsy then I am truly a freak. I took Bonine (name brand not generic) on our cruise and I did not feel drowsy at all. At least I don't think I did. Lol, I also drank my fair share of alcohol and a little more caffeine than normal. But I attributed that to waking up earlier than normal (5:30 every morning). So my opinion is that if you have normal enrgy levels and dont normally need Coffee or Caffeine to get going in the day than it won't bother you with drowsiness... just my humble opinion.

However, after our very rough seas cruise over 4 days on the Wonder Feb 28 to Mar 4, we all experienced sea legs for 3 days, and I was the only one of our party of 4 to take any medication....

Doesn't make me drowsy either:thumbsup2

Bonine won't make you drowsy...

I also suggest that you take the Bonine BEFORE you board the ship... I took it the day before and the morning and had no problems after and then only took it one time when we had rougher seas before dinner one night.

If you are wondering how it will affect you, take one on a day you are home.

Also... they have the pills onboard (there is a container of them by the Medical center) and if you do feel sea sick, then call room service and get some green apples and gingerale...

Also... again...

The ship has stabilizers - you will feel the ship move, but the stablilizers help to keep the ship from rocking alot.

Good luck! :thumbsup2

I get very sick from motion, and I take Bonine each night before I go to bed when cruising. It DOES make me sleepy - so taking it at night helps me sleep and keeps me from any side effects. If I feel anything during the day - which for me would mean it would have to be pretty bad - I take ginger capsules. Do check with your doctor about any kind of interaction with any other medicines or OTC meds you may take.

Thank you SO much for all the responses! :) It looks like we'll be trying Bonine for our April cruise!

Another vote for Bonine. On our February cruise we had rough waters on the way back to PC. Didn't mind it at all. I took two each AM and didn't notice any feelings of being tired. I think the recommendation to try at home to see what side effects you may have would be a great idea.

Just got off the Magic 2 hours ago. My son and I use bonine and my husband used the patches. He has problems also with his inner ear. The patches kept falling off, so he also used the bonine and none of us had any side effects from it. We first starting taking it on the airplane ride. I used 1 for the first 2 days then stopped. Unfortunately both my husband and I got nauseated thursday night when the ship when through a storm front. Both used bonine and we were fine in the morning. Definately use the bonine. My son had no effects either from the childrens bonine.

We get the patch from the doctor. We have never had any issues with it. My DH gets sick from everything.....he doesn't fly well, needs to drive, only goes on baby rides etc......he love to cruise as long as he has his patch!!

I also use Bonine - taking it before bed. I have never noticed that it makes me drowsy either. I can't use the patch, it makes my throat close up and everything gets blurry.
