Black Friday Rumors

A 32" tv for $78 would be great, I need 2, but I don't want to wait in line for them. Last year both Amazon and Best Buy had a 24 hour online sale for a 32" LCD tv/DVD combo with free shipping for $99 before Black Friday if I remember correctly. Unfortunately I was working and my phone died while trying to make the purchase:(

I always love Black Friday shopping.

My husband is a Sheriff Deputy, so we are no strangers to him working holidays.

I've worked in assorted customer service, food service, and retail since I was 15, so the concept of "holidays" lost all meaning to me ages ago. :lmao:

I always shop on Black Friday - when I haven't volunteered to work all day and night myself (overtime? yes please) - but there's nothing in particular I'm hoping for this year. I could use a new laptop for my home business, but unless I find an especially great deal, I'm putting that off until it's absolutely necessary.

That would be me. I'm outraged at the silly junk that is sold and the fact that people are so rude, that they go to the movies, Disney theme parks, other entertainment venues.

I don't understand why it would be rude to go to the movies, Disney or other entertainment on Thanksgiving.... :confused3 They're open. If I HAD to work, I would rather be busy or around people to make the time go by.

We go to the movies on Thanksgiving night (and I assure you, we're not rude!)...we do this because my DH and I are both far from our family and we only have my step daughter every other year for Thanksgiving. So we spend it alone. So for us, it's something fun to do Thanksgiving night and has become a little tradition. So before you cast judgement, think about how someone's life is made a little happier by being able to get out and enjoy fun things on a holiday when they're missing their family. :flower3:

When I came on this thread, I kind of thought it would be a Black Friday deal thread... not a Black Friday bashing thread....

Funny thing is, the OP didn't even mention going to stores. We could be discussing online deal rumors

For me, I wouldn't mind picking up a 40" TV or so. We are still watching my old tube TV - I generally subscribe to the "we will replace it only when it breaks and can't be fixed anymore!" philosophy, but the TV really is getting to be a bit of a mess, I've run out of inputs (one blew out and won't work at all) among other problems. But I won't fight crowds in stores for one - I'll just see if there are any deals I just can't pass up online that I can manage to snag. So I'm waiting to see all of the ads get released so I can start planning what hours I need to be sitting at the keyboard hitting the refresh key constantly :rotfl:

We need a new DVD player too - our old one only works with a lot of coaxing. It's many years old too! Same story there though - I won't fight store crowds. No moral issues with the stores being open, I just hate crowds like that - I won't be at the opening of most stores whether it is at 6pm Thursday, 8pm Thursday, midnight or sometime Friday morning. The thought of fighting for parking (one of the things I hate most in life), lining up in the cold (or worse-rain) and getting pushed and shoved trying to get a deal - ehh, I'd rather just pay a bit more and skip all of that. But that's just me - more power to the folks that enjoy that experience. To each his own.

DD14 and I will get up in the wee hours of Friday morning to hit a few stores starting at about 4 or 5am, the ones that opened hours earlier at least. The crazies have usually left by then, but there are still some good deals to be had on clothing and such. We'll also hit Home Depot for their $1 poinsettias which just make the home feel so festive! That's one store I don't mind hitting at their opening - you don't seem to have massive crowds shopping for power tools LOL

Last year it kind of cracked us up to see all the people in their tents and sleeping bags waiting outside Best Buy.... the Best Buy is right near the movie theater and we got out of our movie about 9:00 pm and the line was around the building already... and Best Buy lets the rewards members shop the Black Friday ad tuesday and wednesday online, so all my Black Friday shopping was done the day before Thanksgiving! I'm hoping they do that again.....:)

My fingers are crossed that Target's Black Friday special of the year applies to Disney "Entertainment" Cards. In 2012, it produced a 20-24% discount. In 2013, it didn't work on Disney Cards.

I was amazed last year at how much BF shopping I got done online.

Them's the breaks for people in that line of work. My son works for a movie theatre chain - do you think they give a rip for people who want to stay home with family on Thanksgiving or Christmas? That would be a big "NOPE!" I never see the outrage about theatres being open, though.

Yep, my son was gone Thanksgiving and Christmas and eve last year because he works in a truck garage at a truck stop. It's part of life and we just deal. There are lots of jobs that require to be open on holidays. I have worked my share over the years as well. Just think if my DS wasn't going to work those days trucks would have to park and not make deliveries and everyone would be crying how rude it is that after the holidays there is no food or merchandise on the shelves at the stores. lol

I did see a quote I found funny that said something like Only in America do people spend a day giving thanks for what they have and then run out to buy more stuff they don't really need. lol

When you marry into police and fire Holidays aren't always on the national day.

This year Xmas will be on the 24th for us, I have volunteer to work xmas as long as I can bring my 11dd with me.

TV and radio is on those days, too, never heard a soul complain about it. :confused3

And what do people watch? Live sporting events! That's not just the teams, but the coaching/support staff, the people that run the stadiums, and the tv/radio crews (on air talent, camera people, tech people, etc.). But can you imagine the uproar if people couldn't watch the Cowboys while laying on the couch and digesting their 2nd piece of pumpkin pie, just so the players (and everyone else I mentioned) could be with their families? :duck:

I have an idea, everyone against Black Friday shopping, stay home, and don't complain. You will never change people's minds that are going to go. The OP started his board to get some info on sales and get excited about shopping, not hear everyone else's reasons why THEY don't. I personally worked in a movie theater for years in high school/college, and worked my share of holidays without anyone trying to boycott movies. so I say, if the stores are going to open, and I actually see something worth going after, bring it on:thumbsup2

I find it funny that someone said everywhere should be closed except hospitals and police i believe was the quote...hate to break it to you but that is people who are still working and still missing time with family.....i work retail and im an xray tech.....both jobs i have to work all holidays usually all day so not trying to be snippy or start an arguement but in todays world you have to basically expect to work on all holidays in every job...even smaller stores are opening on those days....and with people screaming for equal rights its gonna start being easier to stay open for Christmas and thanksgiving than having to be fair and close for every holiday that is important to other people.....and btw walmart really does have good deals but i cant see going there at 6 on thanksgiving to save like 20 dollars haha :)

I love getting paid watch fireworks during the summer holidays. actually in my family sometimes we do not celebrate on the actually holiday.

Last year the toy store was the only store that opened at 6:00pm. I moved out dinner up to 4:00pm and the family came over earlier in the day so we still got our family time. This year again I moved dinner to 4:00 but now some of my family members want to come chase the deals with us so I am excited. They have never shopped "gray Thursday" before lol. I am hoping that some store somewhere has a wii u on sale. We have the original wii and it's on its last leg lol so we really need to upgrade it lol

I haven't heard any rumors but am hoping for a good deal on a Keurig and a Shark vacuum.
We are out of town every BF so hoping for good deals at Target, Walmart, and Herbergers (as that is all they have).

I have the black Friday rumor page bookmarked. Hopefully in the next week or so they will leak the ads.

I heard that target is opening at 8:00 she has worked there a long time so i would beleive she's right.

I work part time at Target in Maine. It is illegal for major stores to open on Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter (Blue Laws) so we'll be opening at 12:01 am Black Friday. My store takes requests for shifts and usually does well honoring the requests.
