Bizarre Smoking Locations

I don't know if its when we went, or what, but I thought back on it, and I really can't remember even noticing where most of them are LOL...... I actually think we ate our Dole Whips where PPs have mentioned, but I don't even remember seeing someone with a ciggarette.... hmmmm has to be b/c things were mostly dead, but heck if I didn't notice, and my DH didn't (he was trying to quit after a deployment) thats pretty impressive......

O I did remember one, but it was back over by the TearDrop, so its out of the way anyways, the only reason we even went over there was to see Rafiki ;)

By far the STRANGEST smoking area I've seen - anywhere - is in Dinoland at AK - there is actually a Dinosaur in the middle of the smoker's courtyard near the entrance to a store - the smoking area had tons of kids climbing on the Dinosaur - very odd to put a playground item in the middle of a smoking area.

Really? You can't just come up the side/back path and avoid the smokers?

I don't know where exactly you are talking about.

I was over in the 70's secton and had a hard time getting to the laundry area with the stroller. I would put the laundry on and then go to the Food court. Maybe there is another path or something I missed.

Surprisingly (because I am very sensitive to smoke) I have never noticed the one by the castle. I had forgotten about the one near Aloha Isle...it's definitely up there with the one at TL I mentioned in my OP. I wonder what criteria Disney uses when designating an area.

I'm a non-smoker and I hate cigarette smoke, but I think WDW should post "No Whining" signs to remind the non-smokers to leave the smokers alone in the desginated areas.

No, not really. That's why these two locations at Pop are being called odd. Even if it were possible to walk all the way around on a side pathway, it is an odd situation. That the designated smoking area is right where folks would be walking with fresh, clean laundry. It is setting up a potential confrontation where shouldn't be one. The smoking area could easily be a place off to the side that's no more inconvenient to smokers, but not in the direct pathway of those who are doing laundry. I would think an area off to the side would also be slightly more pleasant for the smokers.

We came accross a few that were very close to a washroom and one at POP close to the pool on the way to our room. It really annoyed me to be walking to our rooms or to a washroom with my son who has asthma and not knowing it was a smoking area until the smell hit us. Nothing against people who smoke but personally I think theme parks should be smoke free or have their smoking areas in an area that others don't have to go through to get to anything. Just my opinion.

My apologies. It is against policy in the DVC sections. I just assumed it was board-wide. Weird.

So it's OK for some of these folks to categorically criticize smokers, their families and the way they treat the same (read some of the prior posts)? If that's the case, can I freely assume that I can respond without fear of reprecusions deemed personal attacks by me and without fear of banishment or penalty?

I will not sit idly by and watch people categorically smeared for a lifestyle choice that people make as adults and not respond, yet if I do, I will be called out for personal attacks.

That's just horse manure and that's why it should be closed.

I will respond if it is allowed to continue and my responses will not be popular with non-smokers. Disney decides where we can smoke and this thread has deviated on several occasions from the OP's apparent sincere intentions. Whether you agree with Disney's allocated smoking areas or not is up to you. There's really nothing to discuss.

Vote with your $$$ and don't go to WDW or buy stock and throw out the leadership and tell them why. Your choice.

Funny, I was just reading along thinking, Wow! this thread is really being nice for such a controversial topic. And then this...:confused3 Continuing to read though, the rest of posts are very polite. Very impressed!

Just realized this is not the thread I thought it was. Odd. There is actually one on the resorts board. I am deleting my previous post since it probably belongs there too. Don't worry if you didn't see it - there was nothing offensive or anything, just a list of a few more bizarre DSAs but I think it's been covered. :goodvibes

You can not discuss smoking issues if you are DVC? :confused3 Now that IS weird!!!

They may have had a lot of problems with that topic on that particular board. Like we don't allow discussion of tipping on the restaurant board unless it's in a designated tipping thread, and personal tipping habits are out. Too contentious.

You know I fully admit I am not a very observant person and to be honest I can not remember ever noticing a DSA! I've been reading this thread and trying to remember seeing one and just can't! There are so many threads where I feel so left out I can't comment on anything!! Just today I was reading a thread on TREX and for the life of me I can't remember what I had to eat there! I even looked at the menu to try to "jog" my memory and nothing! I have a list of things to "look out for" on our next trip, I will have to put DSA on it ;)

It does say "DVC Boards."

One DSA I found odd was the entrance to the South Wing of the CR from the parking lot. I know about the only people to use this entrance would be those staying in the wing and driving, but it did seem odd to me. That's also the area that the CR staff seems to smoke in too, talked to some very interesting CMs while keeping DW company while she indulged esp late in the evening.

I agree. I don't smoke, but if you're smoking in a DSA, have at it. I do think that they should make some of them in better places lol!

Had I done that defending smokers, it would have been considered a personal attack and I would have been reprimanded yet you get away with it.

I am a smoker and if you build your argument in general not personal way nobody will consider it a personal attack. Just use your words wisely and do not cross line when you express your thoughts. And if you feel someone crossed line you can always report post to moderators. I generally hate this topic, it brings ugly to board. Guess it was too quiet lately.:confused3

Correct me if I am wrong but DSA were created for safety not convenience of non-smokers. Smoking in the park is dangerous because of possibility burn someone and possibility of fire. Also less garbage to clean. Moreover, DSA are in open air areas, meaning smoke and smell flies away pretty fast. With all of the above, why it even bothers anyone, how about strong parfume or sweat, bus smell and so on. There are plenty of smells around.

As a smoker.....I am THRILLED that smokers have DSA (and agree with everything you are saying) having gone to WDW since the early 80's I remember the horror of seeing a cigarette in someones hand at the level of a childs face :scared1:

RE: Pop DSA's

Two of the DSA's in Pop are a little weird. The one in the 50's is actually a conjunction of (in shape of hidden mickey too which is cute) several paths that head into the 50's pool, so you can take another path.....really out of the way tho'. I handle it by making sure I do not get put into the 50's so no need to walk that way.

The one behind the food court is a little more inconvient. To get to Everything Pop you really have to walk through the DSA, unless you walk around to the other back entrance to the check-in and then through the shopping part. Now, I just hold my breath if someone is there smoking, I try to be a live and let live person...smokers need their place too, but I think the powers that be could have looked a little more into it.

Oh my gosh YES! I certainly don't mind smelling a little aromatic scent from someone's perfume here and there but when I feel as though I've just drank a bottle it is not okay! Why are so many people oblivious to this? Just because you can't smell it strongly enough doesn't mean you have to spray it for an hour to make sure it lingers. Also I understand that WDW gets crowded and hot and humid but is it really that difficult to apply a little deodorant before you leave and maybe shower once or twice a week ?

That said, I really only remember seeing one DSA to be honest, they must be super well hidden! I don't even remember where it was, I just remember that it seemed like everyone was sitting on top of each other because it was so crowded and it seemed like they had a teeny little space. To my recollection though it seemed pretty well away, I'm pretty sensitive to smoke and I really didn't notice any smell that lasted more than a few seconds while passing by.

P.S. As a non smoker I just thought I'd tip my hat to the smokers on here and those I've seen at the park for trying to stay out of people's way (I don't mean for this to sound offensive but for some reason I can't think of a better way to say it). I used to smoke once or twice a day (even though I've always hated the smell of smoke, weird I know) when I was in college and I always tried to make sure I was clear of anyone because I didn't want to smoke in someone else's face. It seems like the people on here do the same and I can tell you that I, at least, appreciate it!
