This year, I've gotten firm about inviting the kids I intend to invite and not inviting all of the kids in the family. For DD's 4th birthday, I invited friends who were her age. I didn't invite all of their siblings. Even when I invited DD's girl cousin (who is close to her age), I didn't invite her older boy cousins... My 9 year-old nephew wouldn't have enjoyed a princess bday party for 4 year-olds anyway.
For DS's birthday, I'll be inviting kids his age who are his friends.
If I were you, OP, I'd tell whomever is offended, "I'm sorry, but we're only inviting girls this year." You really can't please everyone all of the time.
