Billboards for illegal items?

I get stuff in the mail all the time from mail-order places that sell fireworks. I always wonder if they do any research before they mail stuff out. Hellloooo, I can't buy your stuff here!

MA state police used to camp out at the NH liquor stores (state-owned) and then issue fines to MA residents who bought there and brought liquor into the state. Our then governor ordered the NH state police to run off the MA police. It was fun.

There used to be a massive legalization of pot billboard on the pike near the Auburn mall, which always amused me.

i could'nt believe it when our then local stores (walmart, target...) started selling fireworks. safe and sane were illegal in all the cities and counties around us-a person purchasing would have had to be planning pretty much on going out of state!

Whats wrong with that? :confused3 We purchase alcohol in NH when we go up there because it is cheaper but I didn't think there was anything illegal about it.

It's not just fireworks.
Casino gambling is illegal in Georgia but there are plenty of billboards from casinos on the Gulf Coast along the interstates.

I grew up in and around the Millis Ma, area. Even though fireworks were legally banned, during the 4th of July, that ban seemed to be always overlooked by the police. In fact, I remember many times going to the baseball fields that connected the three schools, and watching the police build an enormous bonfire, then start chucking in handfulls of all kinds of fireworks. We used to also buy many fireworks at makeshift stores that seemed to pop up over night all over the town, and the police never seemed to care about them.
Of course that was about 30 years ago.

Same thing goes on here in Illinois. Fireworks are legal in Indiana and when I am traveling to see my dad who lives close to the border of Indiana I see all sorts of billboards for fireworks in Indiana.

Yet, when you return to Illinois after buying the fireworks you are stopped and busted.

Yes, what is wrong with that... We head to Maine from MA all summer long stopping in NH to buy liquor! Hmmm! :confused3

There are illegal in NJ also but not in Pa. We use to go to the Poconos and get them I did hear NJ is trying to team up with the sellers in PA to crack down on Jersey residents buying them. I am really sure they will want to cooperate :lmao:

So all of you who live in MA don't get to see fireworks? What do you do on the 4th of July? It's my favorite holiday. Do you at least get to see big displays of fireworks put on by someone? Wouldn't that be illegal too? Or is it they just can't be sold in MA?

Yeah, there are some bigger shows, basically you have to get a permit to light off any kind of fireworks. I don't know about costs or procedures, but apparently it can be done.

We do see/ have fireworks in MA. I think it's just illegal to be sold in MA. I have lived in MA all my life and have no idea, but we do see them.

They are legal if done by a permit, so yes, we have fireworks shows. It's just illegal to own them personally.

Of course, since the fireworks stores in SC (an anything goes state) are only 3 hours away, there are lots of semi-professional class fireworks going off around the neighborhood on the 4th, and New Year's Eve.

We stocked up at HOBO JOE'S on 95 in SC a few years back!:lmao:

Nothing illegal about buying liquor in NH. However if you're a resident in another state, that state doesn't get the tax revenue so on occasion they try to put a stop to NH sales to their residents. What I don't understand is why you can't just say you're going to be vacationing in NH and bought the liquor for your use there.

ALOT of towns in MA put on fireworks shows -- some are GREAT!!!!. They hire professional companies. They need a permit....and insurance I'm sure. Fire, police & ambulance standing by. No amatuer or private "shows" allowed. Too many injuries & accidents. Properties are closer together in this part of country perhaps.

But that doesn't rule out the pros having an accident too. Remember the fireworks barge explosion in Hyannis a few years ago?

And I attended one in Dennis, MA a few years ago. Set off from the beach. Dune grass caught fire near homes....and the little beach streets were so packed with cars it was almost impossible for the firetrucks to get there.

Fun times! :rotfl:

ETA: The law doesn't bother me one bit. I have no desire to buy or set off any. I prefer seeing the professional shows any way. No $ spent that way & they are awesome when set to music. lol

Pretty much every town has some sort of display. Plus private parties are able to set them off with a permit (and an off duty fireman nearby).

People set off fireworks all of the time in MA. Like I mentioned in my previous post, we used to do it all of the time in the summer. It's just something you will get fined if caught (if the cops even care- most don't).

I don't know about other states where it IS legal, but here in MA, since sooo many towns want to / need to hire a professional...and there are only so many professionals...that the town fireworks get spread out for 7/4 get spread out over about a week. A different town every day. You can see professional fireworks EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK for a full week. I think THAT is pretty cool!!!! :thumbsup2

So, in LEGAL states, do you get professional shows in most towns? And are they just on 7/4? Or do you get a few pros shows in a few towns....and alot of amatuer / private fireworks?

We have fireworks at other times of the year too. Some towns do that in other months to not compete with the 7/4 schedule. I like that too!!!!
