Big River Grille call ahead?

How far in advance can you call ahead for seating at BRG? I understand that they don't accept reservations through Disney but you can call them direct. Is that only day of or can you do it before you arrive? Thanks.

I think they told me once to call a few weeks or a week ahead. I never did call though.
