Big Papi Ambushed in DR

MLB’s David Ortiz was shot in what is being called a targeted hit at home in the Dominican Republic. He is said to be in stable condition. Patrons in the bar where the shooting took place beat up the shooter! A news person who was with Papi was also shot and is also said to be stable.

I’m sure he and his family would appreciate prayers and good thoughts. He reportedly said to the doctor as he was going into surgery, “Please don't let me die. I'm a good man."

I also hope he recovers soon. I don't follow professional sports much, but have heard good things about Mr. Ortiz.

I spent some time in the DR in the early 90s. I was living on a sailboat anchored off the small town of Luperon on the north coast, and one day I took the public bus to Santiago to check it out and get some stuff. I didn't see what started it, but some guy on the bus started yelling about something (my Spanish is pretty much limited to ordering beer and chicken with rice and beans). Others started yelling at him and the bus driver stopped the bus and joined the yelling. The first guy whipped out a gun, then 2 or 3 others whipped out their guns. I had foolishly followed the law and turned my gun in to Customs and Immigration during my stay, so I couldn't join the party. After everyone had their guns out, there seemed to be a sort of détente and everyone settled down, and we continued on our way. It was an interesting little day trip.

As a Yankee fan this still saddens me. I have a lot of respect for Big Papi and what he has done as a player. A shame that this happened to him. There were a lot of reports that he was shot several times but you always need to let the stories cycle through for the first few hours due to all the confusion and false reporting-take them with a grain of salt. Sounds like he will be able to make a full recovery which is great. I enjoy his commentary during the playoffs on Fox.

Glad to hear they may be transferring him to the states. I guess he still lives in Boston?

I doubt he had any sort of security and felt somewhat safe given he was born in the DR. I guess many athletes will now consider if they should hire security. It’s a crazy world we live in.

A few miles from me is the state police barracks and some nut a few years ago hid in the woods and shot at troopers during a shift change. One was killed and the other severely wounded.

Big papi appeared to be just sitting at a bar/restaurant having a good time.

That was nice to see and Jeter having all of those send offs his final year just went to show how much he was respected.

I remember when the Yankees gave papi a standing ovation during his last game in the Bronx. It was a well-deserved, bittersweet farewell.

I am actually a Yankee fan, too! I think it's just a rivalry thing going back to when Babe Ruth was traded from the Red Sox to the Yankees (in a crap deal). We love to hate eachother, but we respect that a lot of the players' relationships run deep and when push comes to shove, like in the pics above, it's all good.

I am a big Red Sox fan, and Derek Jeter was always been of my favorite players!
