Big Babies

These kids! I guess I got spoiled by my ever so average sized son. I really feel bad for him when his baby sister can knock him down! The docter said that if we would have had her at term, she would have been over 10lbs.......At my ultrasound 3 days earier, they said she was about 7lbs. Aparently those arent to accurate on weight! (thank goodness, I was totally freaked about having a tiny baby!)

Wow!!! I have the oppposite problem... I have an almost four year old who weighs 28 lbs....last week she wore an 18-24 month skirt to preschool!!!!

Me, too! My DD is 8 1/2, and she is just now at 48" tall. She hasn't hit 50lbs yet, and she has stalled out in clothing sizes- she was always in her age size or below (18 mos to 2T when she was 2, 5 or 6 when she was 6, etc) until she turned 7. Now, at 8, she still wears a 6/6x in bottoms, and a 6x/7 in tops. I know she will have a growth spurt some time in the next few years, but so far she has never been more than the 25th %tile in height or weight.

My eldest weighed 6 lbs 1 oz at birth, she was born 3 weeks early.

At 3 months, she weighed 18 pounds. Yes, you read that right, she tripled her body weight in 3 months. The doctor was astounded, btw, she was exclusively breastfed...I admit, I think we went overboard with the 'on demand' feeding. Cause that girl LOVED to eat and was very demanding about it, LOL.

She was quite a chunky baby and toddler. Always in the 95+ percentile for weight and height. She lost that chunkiness as she hit the school years and then was a bean pole until puberty, but still tall for her age.

She is now 20 yo and an average weight for a young woman who is 5'7". My other two children were more normal weights, but they were consistently in the 95% for height.

I never realized some peoples kids actually wore the correct size clothing for their ages until my sister had kids. My kids always were at least one size above the age, if not more.

(I am 5'9'', DH is 6'5'')

I know exactly what you're talking about! DD is 10 months old and weighs 24 lbs. She has been wearing 18 month clothing since 8 months old! I get tired of the "OMG, she's so huge! What are you feeding her?" comments. It actually makes me paranoid sometimes, making me think there is something wrong with her. She has been 100 percentile weight and height since she was 2 months old. She wasn't born that huge though- 7 lbs 13 oz at birth, born at 39 weeks. She is very healthy though- she's never gotten sick or had an ear infection, etc.

My son is the same. He weighed the same as your daughter during birth, and he will be 5 1/2 months in two days and now weighs 21 pounds.
I feel the same way with all those questions that I get from people.
 to you for having to go through the same things as me.

My DS who is now 17 years old weighed 8 lbs. 13 oz. at birth, 12 lbs. at 2 weeks old and by 6 months he was 32 lbs!

He gained this all just by nursing, but at around 1 month old we had to start giving him pablum because he was hungry all of the time!

He wore his older brother's clothes--and he was 2 1/2 years older...he was also bigger at 6 months than our neighbors 3 y.o. daughter.

He is now 5'11" and slim--he only stayed chubby until just before school started then he stretched out...he was an adorable, "round" little fellow, now he's a tall handsome fellow!

That is my daughtrer too, she is 7 now and in second grade and waist wise she needs a 4t but length wise she needs a 6 -she is only 37 pounds so if she got a size 6 pants they are way to big in waist. Some of the size 5 girls pants are cut bigger than others so I can manage to find some 5's that work but its tough! Once i find one that fits I buy it in every color/ style they have!! What makes it harder is that she will not wear jeans (they are to hard), no zippers, not buttons, no snaps, no ties, nothing running down the leg like a stripe or anything that will feel weird like pockets. So its the stretchy type pants or sweat pants (with no pockets!)

Yep, that's about right- she was just about 21 lbs at 6 months. That was also the time I had to change her from the infant carseat to a convertible carseat because she outgrew it. I also couldn't get her a jumperoo because she would almost be too large for that too! Her size really surprised me because I'm only 5'5 and was a very tiny baby- I was expecting a small baby! DH is 6 ft and built like a linebacker, so I'm blaming him!

You sound like me! I had an ultrasound on a Friday afternoon b/c they thought DD might be big, but they said "nope, about 7lbs." and then Monday morning, out comes DD, all 10lbs. 2 1/2 oz. of her!!!:scared1: They said that her head had already dropped and they measured the wrong part! Word of advice.....have the doctor examine you, don't just go by the tech's doing the ultrasound! (And she was 1 week early!)

I liked having bigger babbies as well, I was much more comfotable w/ them when they were 1st born. DS was 10lbs. 4 oz. when he was born.

DD was 20lbs. at her 1 month check up. We took her out of her baby carrier car seat at 6 months b/c she was hanging over at the top and the bottom! She was fairly "chubby" for about 3-4 years, but now, at almost 11 (next month) she is slim and tall for her age. (I can remember her length, but she has always been tall) The doctors are saying she will be about 6 foot.

DS grew out of his weight much quicker than DD. He is still tall for his age as well. I have the waist and length size problem w/ pants for him. He is 6 1/2 and weighs 55 lbs. I can't remember his height either.

Yep, all my babies were big. DS1 and DS2 weighed 18 lbs at 3 months old!

In kindergarten, DS 2 was already wearing size 10 kids clothes, by 6th grade he was 5' 9" and now at 14, he is 6'3" and they call him Tiny.

My DD is 10, and wears a size 9 women's shoe, and she is 5'3" in 4th grade.

When mine were little, they generally wore sizes that were twice their age, so at 2, they were wearing 4T.

You're right, we do have to buy lots more clothes and shoes!

I used to think my son was large till I read this thread! Both of my kids were the same weight at birth, 8 lbs. 4 oz., born at 38 and 36 weeks, but my daughter grew really slowly. She's almost 3 and 28 lbs. But my son just took off on the growth charts. He's 5 months and 18 lbs., which is what my daughter was around 11 months. But seeing the sizes of some of the kids on this thread he seems like a peanut!

For those of you who had big babies as they were around 4-6 months, did they turn out tall or chubby?
My husband and I are not tall, but because my son weighs 21 pounds at 5 1/2 months, but has a long torso and it is not all baby fat...if you feel him it is muscle what are the chances of him being tall from your experience with your child?

When I was a nanny, the mom had a baby boy. He was 11lbs+ at birth and never looked back! He was in the nursery and all the babies looked like premies next to him.

Now, he is 20 yo, 6'5" and about 235 lbs. I tell him I have retroactive backaches thinking about all the years I carried him around! :faint: :rotfl2:

My kids were small at birth in comparison to others posted - DS was 6.3 and DD was 7.7 both were 3+weeks early. DS has average a 3" height growth every year since he hit 2 (no wonder he cries from leg pains every once in awhile!) Both kids are big for their age - DD5 is in a 6X/7 depending on the clothes and DS6 is into 8's - DD has got some baby fat around the waist but is tall while DS is all muscle and tall. His pediatrician just looks at them and shakes his head...."They are just solid kids." I try to buy clothes at the end of the season (to save a little $$$) but sometimes I have to give the clothes to nieces and nephews because they grew too much in 6 months!

Ok my babies were the following 9-2, 8-14, 10-9, and 9-12.

They are all now very thin children. I think this has to do more with genetics than not. They definitely eat junk food, like kids do, but are by no means even close to being overweight.

My ds-8 (the 10-9 one) is still consistently off the charts in height and his weight is about 75%. The pediatrician says this is just due to his large size and he'll probably be 6-4 or 6-5 as an adult.

As babies though, they were CHUBS, but adorable. Again, I think they're thinness now, comes from dh's family. They can all eat anything and never gain an ounce.:sad2:
