My DD really , really wanted a princess dress. I knew they wouldn't fit her, so I made one for her. I told her I would make her a Belle dress. First of all, I'm not much of a seamstress. I went to a second hand shop and bought a ladies party dress, royal blue, with a full skirt. It was huge- size 22, but that didn't matter. I cut off all the lace, and the sleeves. I cut the neckline into a square, and ended up with a blue jumper. Of course I took it in on the sides. Length ok. With a white crinoline and a white blouse under, and a white apron on top. She looked gorgeous. I combed her long brown hair into a low pony tail, added a blue bow made from scraps of the dress and voila- a Belle peasant dress. She was quite happy and wore it, but once she saw the little girls with their store bought dresses, she reaqlly really wanted a real princess dress. We tried on a Cinderella and Belle gown, size XL. They fitted everywhere except the bust. Mother to the rescue again.

I bought a XL Snow white dress, took it back to the hotel room and

cut it from the waist to the neckline, leaving the waist and neckline intact. I covered the cut fabric with duct tape

, and basted the cape down with thread. The back gaped open, easing through the bust line. I suppose I could have sewed the back instead of using duct tape, but since I was in a hotel room, my sewing supplies were very limited. The cape covered the open back, the dress fit perfectly, and mother and daughter were very happy.
On a side note, she wore the dress to a P&PP and insisted I wear the Belle peasant dress
