beverages in checked luggage

Years ago, when we came back from WDW, I brought a six pack of Ybor City beer(bottles) in my luggage and had no problems.

Now that we're going back and I don't want to spend a lot(HA!), do you think I'd be safe throwing a 12-pack of cans into our checked bags?

Or will it explode? what an embarrasment that would be.....

Any way you can bring it as a carry-on instead? Your checked luggage gets tossed around "a bit" and yes, cans of carbonated beverage could explode.

No, I hate to be some lush-looking fellow carrying on a 12 pack of Labatt
Blue just to save a few bucks.....I may just skip it....thanks.

This is pretty funny. DH and I stayed at the Portofino Bay Hotel in July. Somehow we ended up buying twice as much bottled water as we needed during our grocery stop. When we checked out, we had 8-10 bottles of water and two bottles of beer. DH put them in a brown paper grocery bag and brought them with us to the front desk. I looked around for someone checking in who might appreciate the beverages. No takers. I got tired holding onto the paper bag (which was heavy and beginning to tear) so I just set it down just outside the front door. I then walked away to go to the restroom before our limo came. As I was walking off, I saw the bell staff pick up the bag.

Well--upon arriving at the airport, imagine my surprise to find the bag in the trunk of the limo. It had been loaded while I was in the restroom. DH swore he had nothing to do with the bag getting into the limo. Well, here's the funny part. DH put a couple bottles of water wiht our carryon stuff. He removed the bottles of beer from the bag and threw them in the trash. He then took the paper bag with the remaining bottles of water and asked that they be checked with our luggage! . Much to my surprise, they actually checked the paper bag! The lady at the AirTran counter even put a lot of tape on the bag.

Believe it or not, the paper bag with the bottled water made the journey just fine!

I don't know how it is at Universal, but when we stay at Walt Disney World, and we ship something there or purchase something there, and we don't want to take it back with us, or ship it back, we just leave it in the room for the mousekeepers. Then they can either toss it, or take it for their own use.

As for taking beverages on the plane, my sister, who has to drink sodium-free water, usually takes one or more bottles of sodium-free water with her on the plane, and as far as I know, she has never had any problems doing so.

I would hesitate to put any beverages in your checked luggage. My mother-in-law put a plastic bottle of Diet Coke in her suitcase yesterday only to find that it had exploded and made a huge mess of her clothes. I refused to let my husband do the same and now am very thankful that I did prevent him from bringing home any leftover beverages.

Yes, 3AuMillers is correct. It is probably not a good idea to put beverages in your checked luggage, and I should have been clearer in my post. When my sister travels, she carries it in her carry-on luggage, and as far as I know, she has never had any problems.

We did have several bottles of water / juice boxes in our carry-on luggage and nobody said a word about it.

Thanks for the advice, everybody. You're right. A soaked snack suitcase(say that three times fast!!) is not worth the beverage savings....
