Best time to check in AKL

We have reservations for AKL December 1-4. What is the best time to get to AKL for checking in? Or doesn't it matter.

Are reservations are for a Standard View room, but do not want to be on the first floor, would prefer one of the better Standard view rooms.

I have also heard of people when checking in getting upgraded for free. I know not to expect this, but was wondering when people have gotten free upgrades did they check in earlier or later in the day or is it just the luck of the draw.

I have a feeling it is probably just the luck of the draw, but any assistance would be appreciated.

We checked into AKL last week on Wed. We arrived around 11:15 or 11:30 am. We had booked just a regular standard view room and were pleasantly surprised when they upgraded us to a pool view. It was a spectaular view. Although our room wasn't ready, we didn't mind and just hung out at the pool for a few hours and had lunch at Mara. I think out room wasn't ready until about 2:30 or so. It was not crowded at all at check in and the hotel didn't really seem to be too packed. Maybe that is why we got the free upgrade.
