Best Of - Charleston, SC

Out of curiosity--is Carey Hilliards (sp?) still around.

It's been ages--I forget what street it would be on. It is in Charleston.

I think there is one West of the Ashely and in North Charleston. I wouldn't swear, though, as I've never been.

At Guiseppe's today (lunch special) I got a soda, huge piece of 2 topping pizza and a "side" salad (again, HUGE) for $5.50! DEAL! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

You're speaking my language - cheap! :rotfl:

I've actually had fun playing this new 'game' since I have so much time on my hands ;) I cut a bunch of coupons out of the Sunday paper last weekend and then I looked up what was on sale at Piggly Wiggly, BiLo, and Harris Teeter. I then compared the sales with my coupons. I ended up going to BiLo and Harris Teeter and saved $30 at each place. In total I spent about $80 on groceries and saved almost $60!!!!!! Fun Game!! :)

Let's see....

Tom Potaro's is closed because none of the kids/grandkids wanted to take it over.

Carey Hilliard's on Rivers Ave in N. Charleston is still open- the one in West Ashley closed.

Try Joseph's on King (I think) for breakfast or lunch- yummy!

Melvin's is the Best BBQ around- but we have Robert's Barbecue right around the corner from us in N. Charleston! There's also a Mustard Seed in Summerville- their Hummingbird Cake is to die for!!

Hominy Grill is great for local food too.... it's in the vicinity of C of C.... great brunch menu on the weekends- they have a website too!

Enjoy getting acquainted with the area- we've been here for about 6 years, and although it's a change from our previous location (Va Beach)- it's also about 5.5 hours CLOSER to WDW!!!

Yes, that proximity to WDW thing was a MAJOR selling point! Just remind me that tomorrow when it's my birthday and my mommy isn't here (sniff sniff :guilty: ) So exactly how long does it take to get to WDW from here anyway? 6-7 hours??

It usually takes us anywhere from 6-7, depending on DH and whether he can get his patootie in gear.

We just take 17 to 95 to 4, and we're there!

Happy Birthday tomorrow-

If you're looking for something to do, try walking up the new Ravenel bridge. Locals call it the Cuzway. It's a great view when you get to the top- and we're doing it tomorrow morning. We go about half to 3/5 of the way and take in the view before heading back to the car.

Welcome to town!

Thanks, and Congrats BTW on the 85 pounds, you're my hero! :goodvibes
I think we're going to go check out the Taste Of Charleston tomorrow. We've been wanting to walk the bridge since we got here, but we only packed enough stuff with us to last about 2 weeks thinking the rest of our things would be following after that (DFi's parents are bringing it.) However, things keep holding them up and it's been a month and no stuff. So we have no tennis shoes. For that matter, no bed, only 1 TV, no sofa, no chairs, no dining room table, etc... :rotfl:

Karen,
Have a wonderful birthday tomorrow in your new home! My birthday is on Wednesday so I'll be celebrating too. DH's birthday is a week from Monday so we're leaving Thurs. afternoon for a long weekend in Florida! The trip is just under 5 hours for us. That is definitely one of the best "perks" of living in SC!

Hope your day is a great one!

Thanks! You too! My Fiance's birthday was on Thursday, and yesterday he said let's just drive down to WDW for the weekend for our birthdays (on a whim.) I almost went for it! I really did, but there is just no way right now financially. Have a great time!!!

Happy B'day, Karen! :cheer2:

We get to WDW in about 6 hours if not towing the camper. Towing our camper takes about 8 hours. We also take 17 south to 95 then I4. I have to say I4 has to be the looooonnnnggest part of the trip. The only stop we make on the way is at exit 1 in Georgia. There is a gas station on the right (heading toward Florida) that sells diesel and a Wendy's at the same place.

Happy birthday and welcome to Charleston!
I have a little one (the youngest) turning 4 this month. I want them all to grow up and move out of my house, but I don't want them to get any older :teeth: .

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes! It's hard without my family here, but at 12:01 my fiance called me over to the computer and played a Disney AOL Birthday greeting for me with Cinderella. It was cute!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to let you know that we loved The Taste of Charleston. It was like our own little food and wine festival! :rotfl: And since it's my birthday, I walked in and said, 'All this for me? You shouldn't have.' :rotfl:

Did you pick up a listing of who was doing what?

I'd love to see one- that way we could decide if we'd like to do it next year!

Happy Birthday! :bday:

We couldn't find a list anywhere. All they had to hand out was a list of events that were going on and the times for them. Tickets cost $1 each, and items at each booth cost either 1,2, or 3 tickets (equivalent to $1, $2 or $3.) Let me see who I can remember being there...

Texas Roadhouse
Red's Ice House
Kickin Chicken
Sticky Fingers
Applebees
Ben and Jerry's
Gullah Cuisine
Gilligan's
T Bonz
Kaminsky's
Guiseppe's
Wild Wing
Bocci's
AW Shucks
Tommy Condon's

I can't think of any more. There were a bunch of little deli and cafe places there too, but since I hadn't heard of any of them it's hard for me to remember what they were called now. There were also 2-3 beer and wine tents, and there was one coke truck selling coke products and water for 1 ticket each.

We bought $15 worth of tickets, and by the time we had 4 left we were really full. Not too bad. The heat didn't help. Let me know if you want some examples of what food items were available and what they cost. I'll try to remember as much as possible. It would've really helped for them to hand out a map with everyone that was there and what they offered because we had to keep doing laps to decide what we wanted. Good exercise, though ;)

DFi thought of some more

Moe's
Folly Starfish Grill
Vickery's
Dunes West (whatever their big restaurant is, can't remember the name)

Thanks so much!

Even though DH is MSG sensitive, we could probably find enough to nibble on while we're there.

It sounds like you two had a great time.....

I know- all you want to do now is take a nap!

:rotfl: How did you know? ;) Between the food and the heat and DFi watching Nascar and Football all afternoon I'm ready to zonk out!

As for the food options, I think it was a decent variety enough that your DH could find something. They had sandwiches, wraps, tons of ribs, tons of seafood, asian food, pizza, salads, appetizers, bbq items, etc.

PS A new find of mine...The Kickin Chicken's special sauce. I had it before and thought it was so good. I was shocked when the server told me what it was made of :earseek:

North Charleston was the one we went to. It actually had a serious fire in the 80s--closed for months...I remember it being tasty...but we only went once. I was a kid--so maybe my parents didn't think it was so great.
