Best free experiences?

I would love to try this. Can you tell me more about the game and how it works? Did I read once it's more fun at night?

When you go into the park, stop at firehouse and get signed up and get cards. By signing up all of you, you each get packs, so more chances for different cards. They will give you a map of the portals. There is a different"game" in each land, and they usually start you on Main Street. You go to the first portal on your map and you hold a key card up to open it. Then you will see a cartoon where the character tells you about a villain that needs to be defeated. You will use one of your cards to get by the first challenge(some cards are more "powerful" than others as you will see on them) and then you will be directed to next stop - usually takes about 4-5 to defeat the villain. It takes a few times to get the hang of it, sometimes have to try a few cards before it works.

Once that game is done, you can move on to another, or stop. It is time consuming, but fun, so you have to see how it works in your plan. It is best if you have more than one day in MK to do your main things. At the portals, sometimes you will run into others playing, and some like to trade, if you have duplicates in your packs, and have one they don't. DD has a binder now, and has traded a few times.

Do you have to defeat a villain each time in order to get a new pack of cards the next day?
And if you have two people get packs, do they each have to defeat a villain to get new ones?

No, I believe you just have to play at least one portal to get a new pack, and they will just start you on a new game the next day. I am not sure if you each have to play - I feel like DD and I each got new cards, but only she played, so I don't think so, but you could ask when you sign up.

When we went to DD before it was renamed to DS, we were on a very tight budget. We stopped there the night before our cruise. The kids had a blast walking around seeing stuff, wandering through the Disney store, Lego store, etc... We did go late at night (after 6 I think) and it was nearly a ghost town (10 Jan). We got out w/o spending a dime. My kids were 5 (twins) and 3.5 at the time and I made it very clear they would not be getting anything that night. They were fine with it. They were just excited to see all the different stuff. Lol

Went back in 2013 during the refurb. Ate dinner at T-Rex and the kids had a blast digging in the 'bone yard' (didn't have to have a Ressie to do that I don't think). This time they were 6.5(twins) and 5. We visited all the same shops, saw all the new stuff and aside from dinner, only walked away with autograph books that I had already planned to buy anyways.

All that to say, you CAN do DS and not spend money. Just set the expectation early so they aren't disappointed. We did the same thing with the Boardwalk.
