I know rates are higher in the summer, and this will probably be especially true with everything going on down there. Where is the best place to stay during the busy season?

Everywhere has higher rates in the summer, until you are staying way too far away, like Las Vegas.

In the summer staying down Harbor can be viewed as ok, because the extra time dealing with shuttles isn't a big proporation of the park operation hours.

If you are someone that likes midday naps or swims, it will take a more time going back and forth if your are far away. It may be nicer to stay within walking distance.

Only you can define whats best for you. Are you looking for motel or perhaps resort style? Walking distance or use own car or shuttle? Is cost the major factor or some other factor?

For us, I have been unable to justify the $125++ for something in walking distance thats also nice and somewhat upscale. Instead I find 3*+ resorts for $60-$80 a few miles away. Some include breakfast making it far more affordable than the onsite or walking distance hotels. We don't have small kids so little need to take afternoon breaks. For next months trip onsite hotels with AP rate are $250-$400. Even Hojo's is $149 (no retro/ent available). Thats not 'best' for us but perhaps for others that need a close hotel its worth the $'s to them.

Like Huff said, only you can judge what is best for you, how much $$$ you want to spend, how far away, how many people going, etc. We can better advise when you define your needs better.

Thanks for your help, everyone! I will be going solo. I don't have to be right across the street, but I don't want to be too far. I can use the ART shuttle, I just don't want to be miles away. It doesn't have to be a fancy place, but clean and nice enough where I feel safe. I am trying to keep costs down, so less than $100 per night would be great.

We have pricelined rooms for $45 even in July. Most of the Hotels we get our near the Toy Story Parking lot so not that far away. One of them even had its own free shuttle to the park.
