Hi All! My daughter is currently in the College Program at WDW. We are planning on visiting her in early December. We are considering staying at either POR or POFQ. Which do you think would be best for my Mom? She has COPD and we plan on getting a wheelchair for her, but we want to make it as easy as possible for her. I would appreciate any advice you can offer! :)

I think that either a Preferred room at POR or Building 4 at POFQ would suit your mother best. Preferred is a paid resort level, so is guaranteed, whereas the building 4 request at POFQ is only that- a request. Note on the reservation that a member of the group is in a wheelchair and request a ground floor room. Any of these buildings would put you near the main building and transportation.

You can also specify if you need a wheelchair accessible room (as opposed to a regular standard room)

I have MS and would recommend FQ for it's small size and ease to get around. I would also recommend telling the CM, when you make your reservation, that your mom has special needs, will be in a wheelchair and a ground floor room close to the Lobby/bus would be helpful. Special Needs dept is wonderful and they have always taken good care with me.

Have a wonderful trip!:goodvibes
p.s. if she will be using a regular wheelchair, these are available at most resorts for free for the length of stay. You can take these to the parks as well. If she only needs a wheelchair for the parks, those can be rented by the day, for a few days or by the week, but must be turned in each time you leave a park and picked up at the next park.:thumbsup2

I wouldn't recommend using the resort wheelchairs- they only have a few and I've found that they aren't in the best condition. I usually just rent the chair while in the park. If your mother will need one 24/7 I'd recommend that you rent one for the whole time you'll be there from an outside agency. They're in good condition and the price is very good. The disABILITIES board has information about several of these agencies.

We have been fortunate to have a different experience.:thumbsup2

I would go with POFQ. It is much smaller than POR. Also, every building at POFQ has elevators, just in case you don't get a ground floor room. The preferred buildings at POR do not have elevators. I've twice requested ground floor rooms for my mom (she has problems with her knees, has had surgery on them) but didn't get them either time.

Everything that Minnie Mum is saying is right on the mark. Follow her advice and you won't go wrong. It's exactly what I would recommend!
