Best book you

My all time favorite has to be the Harry Potter series.

Some of my classic favorites are:
Shogun
Eye of the Needle
The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings.

Recent favorites:
The Kite Runner
One Second After
The Hunger Games
The DaVinci Code

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
Anything by Dumas (especially The Three Musketeers)
The Princess Bride (seriously, if you've only ever seen the movie, you NEED to read it)
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court
The Jester
Angels & Demons

I also recently loved the George RR Martin books and can't wait for the 6th.

It's funny how the vast majority of us cannot answer a question "What is the best book ever read?" ... not books... but BOOK.

Has there ever been a more difficult question?

What if you could only take ONE BOOK with you to a deserted island to spend your remaining days with? Even then, I'd be torn with the two previously mentioned in my post.

Interesting that most of the books listed are in the fiction category.

Well, I originally took the question to be specific to literature, and thus to exclude non-fiction. If I'm allowed to add nonfiction, I would say The Ancestor's Tale.

Many mentioned The Book Thief. My son has to read this one before school starts and is struggling with it. I will have to read it and form my own opinion.

I love series. My favorite is the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward

Other than that To Kill A mockingbird is probably one of the most memorable books.

Your son may be struggling with the very beginning, like I did. Tell him to just get thru those first 10 pgs or so, then the real story starts and is much easier to understand. It starts with "Death" as the narrator, pretty strange, I understand where he's coming from. But it turned out to be an amazing read.

For me, it was easy. Had the question been, "What are your favoriteS?", I could have made a list. But, I have the one that stands out & I've read and re-read it so many times I've lost count.

The best book I've ever read is "Ghost Story" by Peter Straub. (Peter Straub has worked on some collaborative pieces with Stephen King.) It's so intricate, detailed and beautifully-written. I wouldn't say it's my favorite book, but it's one of the best-written books I've ever read.
.

LOVE Peter Straub :thumbsup2

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate diCamillo. I know it's a children's book but I had to read it for a Children's Lit class a semester ago and I fell in love with it.

Interesting two people I saw named Charm School. I loved that when I read it as a kid and have read it since.

Also The Stand love interests me, as I found that beyond even regular King-level tedium. Hate.

How many people here also look at other people's books when they're in a new person's house?

You know, a bookcase full of King says something different to me than a bookcase full of Anne Tyler or Palahnuk or ... etc. I always find peoples' book collections interesting - I think they tell more about a person than most other things.

When I was a little girl we went and visited at someone's house. We were there for a little while and then I went over to my mother and whispered " I don't like this place", my mother was quite concerned and asked me what was wrong, I replied "they don't have any books"

My favourite/s

Classic Persuasion by Jane Austen
Contemporary The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

And one I read recently that could easily become a favourite but would need to be re read a couple of times to reach that status is Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend by Matthew Green. It was wonderful.
